...HELP!

some unexpected bills are due to come out tomorrow leaving us a bit short of money - i usually spend £80 every fortnight but this week i have just £35.

i have some food in the fridge and cupboards such as -

* a few chicken breasts
* a few pork loins (enough for one meal)
* a small joint of pork
* frozen veg
* sausages (enough for one meal)

* eggs
* spaghetti
* beans
* pasta
* tinned toms
* herbs and spices, stock, gravy, flour ect

so what shall i get?

not much help hun as the kitchen is m OHs expertise :haha:

we buy a sack of potatos from the farm and they they will do for baked potato, mash, roasties and home made chips.

you got a fair amount of meat (well to me as we not massive meat fans)

get come cheap mince and a sauce and have it with pasta or spagetti?

get some more veggies and make a big stew? i think you can make stew nice and cheap :) and you can fill it which veg so you dont need much meat :)

oh yeah need to get spuds from the farm thanks for reminding me!

meat is an issue in this house lol OH is a huge meat eater and has to have meat for his evening meal - but stew is a good idea could prob use the pork loins cut up for that!

Were off on holiday next week so been eating cheaply this week and last! We haven't eaten the healthiest,
We've been having a lot of eggs, (scrambled with toast and beans, omelette or fried with chips)
I'd get a couple of frozen pizzas,
A big pack of mince, you could bulk it with veg to make chilli, spag Bol and a cottage pie maybe, get some wraps and a spice mix for chicken fajitas, if you put loads peppers and onions in you'll only need 1 or 2 chicken breasts cut thinly, and have it with rice or wedges. And get a couple of pasta bakes, you can stick veg in them too. Baked potatoes are cheap too with a tin of tuna or cheese and beans! x

Jacket spuds with chili/beans and cheese
chili and rice
beans on toast
pizza and chips
pasta bakes (buy 1kg bag of pasta)

Yeah we bought a 3kg bag of pasta for less than £3 lol! xx

Me and my OH always eat out but now money is tight and when its tight we go to Iceland. We spend £40 on a shop and it lay us generally 2 weeks.

We buy:

A couple of their £1 pizzas
Kraft cheesy pasta (<3 it)
Big bag of sausages - I can make sausage casserole out I this, sausage sandwiches, bangers and mash the list goes on.
Chicken kievs
Garlic bread
Pasta sachets for nights when I can be bothered
Beans
Cheese
Cereals
Eggs

I've also started buying asda smart price gammon joint for like £5, I cut this in half take the fat off and put in a pot along with half a grated turnip/swede, 5 grated carrots, 4 chopped potatoes, and a full leak chopped, 3 veg stock cubes, 2 ham stock cubes some water to cover half of it and leave it to boil then blend, best soup ever especially when on a budget and can be frozen down, also extremely filling.

Hope this helps :) I know what it's like having unexpected bills eat up all ur money, I lost my job to being pregnant and we only have one wage so need to make ends meet :) x

Get over the moneysavingexpert and on the Oldstyle Money Saving forum. There's a thread on there about a weeks shopping budget of £7!!! I use this thread when looking for inspiration for cutting the pounds andthe meal plans and shopping lists are truly amazing!

I think thats quite easily doable hun just buy the right things, pasta sauces, pasta, Casserole (can eat over two days so two meals) potatoes, baked beans.

Have you got a link for ^ that hun? I'd be interested tp see how they do that lol.

Yeah I would be interested to see that too lol! Also agree with the lady that mentioned iceland - you can get some amazing deals in there and its not bad :) A bag of 16 Richmond sausages for £2 :) xx

That's what we get lol! Out of that bag I can make a casserole, sausage and mash and also have a sausage sandwich one morning and that's feeding 2 of us! X

would love to see that link.

my biggest tip would prob be buying cheap packs of frozen mixed veg. i stick that in pretty much everything to bulk it out x

thankyou - the biggest problem i have is that i have IBS so can only eat a few of the jars/pasta sauces ect so most of my food needs to be made from scratch - the same goes for too much pasta i can only eat a few times a week.

il have a look at MSE website thankyou. xx

i have a few recipies hun, no ibs here but i cook from scratch out of preference x

sometimes it would be so much easier to be able to eat junk lol!! x

The £7 link is below. Have a smooch round this forum as there are some fab ideas here!

I was going to say, go through your freezer and cupboards and work out what you can do with that first. then just get some cheap stuff like mince, pizza, etc

I find most 'value' things are good. You can get masses of stuff for not a lot. My cupboards are always full of value pasta, rice, tins of tomatoes, beans, sweetcorn etc. Value frozen stuff is good and the fresh fruit/veg as well. I always check the reduced to clear bit first :)

I get the frozen mince, but not the value one as we find it just goes incredibly greasy and shrinks loads when cooked, so we get the ordinary supermarket make, I bulk out chilli/bolognese with lentils or mung beans (bought dried, soaked before cooking) and dried soya mince to make it go loads further :)

xx

A other value fan here! I really rate the Tesco range, malt loaf for 28p where Soreen is over a £1, You don't need to eat junk either, I don't believe it's cheaper. My favourite is pepper omlette, a bag of frozen peppers is £1 and 15 eggs in Tesco are £1.35 if I recall. Chuck in some value mushrooms and Ham and you've got a healthy nutritious meal for the price of a frozen pizza.
