Amelia's Birth Story

20/08/12 - Woke up at 5.30am with mild contractions. Stopped and started all day, no pattern. Totally wish I'd spent this time more wisely and slept more :dohh: Managed to sleep between 15-30 minute contractions but not much at all.*

21/08/12 - Cue an exhusted me waking up with more painful and frequent contractions. Call up Labour & Delivery who say I go in if I need it - I did for my peace of mind so we toddled off and OH was sure I wouldn't be sent home because of having such pain. Midwife examined me to be at 2-3cm and encouraged us to go labour at home some more with co-codamol. So back home we go.*

4hrs later, pain is getting unbearable so we head back in about 2pm. Midwife examined to be still 2-3cm  This is one point when I hit a brick wall and started crying  It really felt out of my control. So the midwife offered me Pethadine to help get me through the last bit of the latent stage. Just as she was injecting it into my leg, my waters went. I was so glad as this meant I wouldn't be leaving without a baby!!

About 3pm, managed to get 5 mins sleep here and there while OH and my Mum were reading magazines. Threw up some water but otherwise doing okay, feeling a bit out of it - but the pain was bearable again.*

Then by about 7.30pm, I got to the unbearable stage again and got into the big bath. My bloody show started in there so had to then get out :dohh: Kept feeling like I wanted to push so she examined me and said I was about 6cm dilated so not time to push but I could have gas and air and some more co-codamol. Threw the co-codamol up straight away because of the pain and an empty stomach so just on gas and air til I begged for some more pethadine as by about 9pm, I was not in control of pushing and kept shouting that I needed a poo! So she examined me again - no cervix in the way (e.g 10cm!!)

Started pushing at 9.30pm. Not doing too badly apart from feeling like I constantly was going to poo!*
I was grabbing 10-20 second micro sleeps in between contrations saying silly things like 'Yeah - the ladybirds on the wall' and something about Rick Stein
At about 11.15pm, the midwife found baby's head was at a funny position (facing up) so that was the reason I struggled to push her head out. She had to call the doctor in and it got serious very quick.

He said he wanted to use vontouse to help turn and get baby out alongside my pushing - which meant everything in my birth plan from this went a bit wrong...

I had to have an episeotomy and the suction cup bloody well hurt! Pushing with all my might and the stinging from the dr pulling got too much at one point and had to be encouraged not to give up. At 11.34pm (just over 2.5hrs pushing), Amelia Louise was born.*

She had to be checked over by the pedetrition - which meant the cord had to be cut asap rather than letting it stop pulsating itself but I'm grateful I got to have a physiological 3rd stage myself (cord was delivered very quickly) then I was stitched up :( This felt sooo weird. Felt like a cross-stitch pattern :haha:*

22/08/12 - Had a quick bath and got to know our Little Miss a bit before Mum & OH left about 3am. Had skin to skin and she fed for about 40 mins and fell asleep since about 4.30am. Been watching her sleep so I'm shattered :cloud9:

She's been dozing on and off between cuddles and checks etc. Feeling sore from the stitches and stuff but otherwise good. Just need some sleep so fx'd for tonight.

Thank you all for advice and comments :flower: You're all great :friends: x

Lovely story, sorry to hear she got a bit stuck at the end though- you did so well to push for so long on so little sleep! I pushed for two hours but Id only been in labour four at the time, and that was hard enough.

Hope you're feeling more rested this morning and will be going home soon. It'll be quite a while before you stop staring at her. :cloud9:

Such a lovely birth story and you're very lucky you got to the pushing stage with barely any pain relief! Ventouse is a strange sensation isn't...

You're a very brave girlie and I'm so happy for you both. Welcome to the world Amelia!

When I saw the pick of Amelia I was sure you had the ventouse! Bless her heart, she is beautiful though :cloud9:

Well done mumma!! Its all worth it in the end! :hugs:

Well done, it sounds like you coped really really well! You should be very proud of yourself :smug: Hope you had a great first night at home and your stitches heal up nice and quickly ^_^ tea tree oil in the bath and arnica cream for the bruising, works a treat  x x

Great birth story!

I'm sorry it wasn't exactly as planned, but glad Amelia got here safe and healthy and I hope you're soon healed up :hugs:

Oh and meant to say also mixing a little lavender oil (6 ish drops) in a egg cup of milk, mixing and putting it in your bath helps cuts and tears a treat too.

Well huge congratulations to u. Sounds like u did really well xxx
