My DH has just spoken to the doctor about his 2nd set of sperm analysis results and the news is bad.

His first results came back at 24 million, but we're weren't told anything about motility etc.

Because they said it bordered on a low count, they wanted another sample a few weeks later, the results of which we just got. Although his count has gone up to 55 million, he was told that 80% of them are either immobile or dead.

Doctor worked out that only 8 or 9% of his sperm is any good and told him we had little chance of conceiving through our own attempts, that's without even taking my problems of very irregular af's into consideration.

To be honest, Im devastated. I've accepted that I have problems but I though that DH would be fine. To make matters worse, the doctor who told me she referred me to a fertility specialist 6 weeks ago has gone on maternity leave without making the referral. It's only being made today!!!

I just don't know what to do or what the next step is :hissy::hissy:

I know exactly how u feel my DH results werent great either an i have a LPD.

Get him on vit c, zinc, folic acid and maca. If he doesnt wear boxers he should, no hot baths or showers, and talk on his digly dangles, that's what were doing. I hope it helps.

So sorry about ur referal to, i hope the waiting list is very short. :hugs:

Hey Hun

Sorry about your results.

Really daft question but how long did you guys abstain for before doing the sample? I only ask as we were warned about abstaining too long as it can show a greater number of dead sperm?

We are just waiting on our second results this week but were told that it would be a referral to a urologist for further tests for DH. They would examine him, do his bloods and also check to see if he had varicose veins on his testicles which can cause problems. In the meantime we were told to continue taking the wellman tablets and 1000mg of vit c to improve his count and assist with motility/morphology.

Hope this helps and fingers crossed xx

Oh sweetie I am so sorry :hug::hug:

I hope you dont have to wait to long for an appt.

Thinking of you.

I only found this out after the sample had been left in, and we prob abstained for a week or so which I now know is too long. This is actually making me feel a bit better as I know this could have affected the result to some extent.

I bought DH Wellman Vits a few weeks ago aswell which he hasn't been taking because he says they're disgusting. I bet he's learned his lesson now!!! lol

I've calmed down a bit now as I was in a bit of a state earlier so fingers crossed the waiting list isn't too ong. Been told its a few months though. Again the joys of the NHS!!

Aww hun I am sorry the news wasn't better, i would ask for another test though your GP but with only a 3 day abstainence and no coffee or alcohol for the same period, at leats then you have a realistic count to work with xxx

Did they discuss the next step at all? I was under the impression that for poor motility or count that ICSI is a good option...

Hey chick

If it's any consolation we abstained too long as well - we got told 2-3 days, DH kept putting it off so it ended up 7 or 8 days in the end and his count was only 1.5 million. This time i jumped him Friday night and he did his thing Monday morning  - also got it to the hospital within 30 mins as they say within an hour?

Re the pills - we started off with Sainsbury's specials - they did a soluable vit c 100mg, they also did vit b complex and also zinc - DH has been taking them every evening for the past month. He was also told not to have ANY alcohol at all.... he was best man 2 weeks ago though so we celebrated. He had 2 beers after his test on Monday and was very tipsy - cheap date! :happydance:

They will prob have you do a second test so get him on the tablets, no alcohol and cool baths/showers and that will hopefully give you a good improvement.

I'm still waiting for DH to come home from work so as we can talk about all this properly.

I know the G.P told DH that there was very little he could do to improve his count and that we were best just to wait to see the specialist (very helpful then)

To be honest I'm just very shocked as my hubby is 27, doesn't smoke, drinks very little and is fit and not overweight. I had only just got used to the idea that I might need to go on clomid let alone having to consider IUI, IVF etc instead. Think i need a big glass of wine....................... this is alot to get my head round

by hubby is also on wellmans and had amazing results in 3 months so hopefully hubby will start taking them!! lol xxxx

First of all, get another test done. 1 week abstainence would show a normal fertile man with mass declined motility and morphology. Don't abstain any less or longer than 3 days. My DH abstained for 3 days and his motility was between 15-35% on several tests. One of them he abstained for 5 days and motility was 1%.

So thats the first step, to get another test for accurate results.

Hopefully that test will show an accurate motility and morphology level and clomid may be all you need.

Best of luck :hugs:

Hi Mrs R

I agree with FJL, get DH to do another test, just to be doubly sure.

Which hospital did you get your referral for?

x

Hi Maz,

I'm still waiting on my appointment date and don't even know where they are going to send me. I would guess Craigavon. Which hospital do you go to??

I requested to go to Dundonald as it's where I want to go for delivery. Although apparently the Royal is the only hospital with NHS funding for IVF. You might find that the waiting time for your hospital is quite short but they will only be able to do certain tests and then refer you to the Royal, although it may still work out quicker than waiting for tests at the Royal (if you know what I mean).

I phoned Antrim, the Royal, and Dundonald before getting my GP to refer me, as I wanted to know what their waiting times were and Dundonald was the quickest - but I'm impatient like that and hate waiting unnecessarily.

Hope you get some info soon.

xx

Hi there, thought I would let you know my story. When we were trying, my DH's SA results were not good. The count was on the low side and the motility was very poor. Only 5% were moving effectively. We stuck to all the guidelines about abstinence so I think they were pretty accurate. I had already been seeing a consultant as my periods were very irregular and they werent sure why. The SA results seemed like the last straw at the time. My consultant then started talking about IUI and sperm washing. This sent me into such a depressed panic. She did suggest trying to improve diet before the next SA 3 months later but didn't seem too hopeful. I thought I may as well give it a go with waiting lists being so long. DH cut out all caffine, cut down on alcohol but not completely and I got him Wellman tablets to take which he also said tasted terrible.
To cut a long story short, I found out I was pregnant about 8 weeks after DH starting the Wellman tabs. Maybe it would have happened for me anyway, I don't know but it is certainly worth a try. I hope this makes you feel a little more positive, my story seems quite similar to yours. Good luck. :hugs::hugs:

Aww hun, thanks for sharing this. U have totally made my day!! Our stories do sound similar so I hope I get my happy ending too xx

Hi guys!

DH just had his results back and we are devastaed...11% vitality and only 8% total Motility.

The only saving grace I can see is that we abstained too long - 9 days. We already have a DS who's 4, so hoping that it was the abstinence that caused it.

We're also in NI and even thinking of going private for more SA as his doc seems to think that's it!!!:hissy:

yes it is devastating hun, i bet ya feeling pretty gobsmackeed, devastaed, wondering what the future holds etc, and you will feel like this for a couple of days. I found out my bf has no sperm whatsoever last wed. i couldnt remember the following two days after that, not sure how i managed to go to work! but my inner strength kicked in and i started to get stronger and became a strength pillar for bf. although they dont seem THAT bothered they are gutted. my fella is gutted.
i hope the specialists come up with something. its prob looking like icsi. whens ya next at the specilists?
xxx
