I hav had high blood pressure since 29 weeks so was booked in for an induction on 27.03.13.
On arrival to the hospital I was 1.5cm dilated. I'd being having small contractions like period pains for the past 2 days. I was attached to the monitor and all looked well so they put the propess in. That was a bit uncomfortable going in and looked like a really small tampon. Then the plan was to wait 24hrs and see if anything happened. If it didn't happen I would be examined- if they could break my waters they would- if not, another propess for 24hrs. After that, if still no baby I would have the hormone drip. This sounded like a really long process so I hoped something would happen.
So- nothing happened the first 24 hours. Just stronger pains than the ones I'd been feeling but they disappeared again in the evening. Thursday 28.03.13 I had only dilated to 2cm (gutted) and she couldn't break my waters so another 24hrs of propess. (Cue more magazines). That morning I started to have more pains. They got worse by about 2pm and I was starting to panic. I wondered how I'd cope if the pain was like that already. It was manageable bouncing on the ball and being massages by my dh. Around 4pm they were much stronger- my mom (who is a midwife, was also with us) decided to speak to the mw looking after us. She said there was no point examining me until the next day and she had several other induction ladies with the same "niggly pains". Great. With that my mom went off to speak to the head of midwifery and the matron (she used to work at the hospital) and kicked up a general stink.
By this point I was feeling a bit scared as my pains were lasting 50secs every 5mins. The mw came in and attached me to the monitor and sure enough there showed the contractions. She left to get the doctors as they were on ward round. As she left I sat on the ball- I felt an almighty pop- as if someone had burst the ball inside me. I stood up as the ward round walked in and my waters went everywhere.
Up I was thrown on the bed and examined by the doctor. The propess had fallen out and I was 5cm dilated. After my waters broke contractions started coming pretty fast. I had the gas and air and it worked really well with the help of my dh reminding me to breathe. My bp was doing crazy things and was really high so I was hooked up and left on the bed. (I wanted a home birth so this experience was far from my plan). I managed on gas and air for a while and then turned into a crazed woman and asked for an epidural. Everyone agreed as it would bring my bp down but I never thought I would ask for one. When the anaesthetist finally arrived after 5 attempts (I didn't feel) the epidural was in. As they were putting it in I was having so many contractions I was just high as a kite on the gas. I remember a new mw trying to find baby's heart rate and getting everyone to stop. At this point I opened my eyes as I had the strangest sensation. It felt like something had dropped inside me and I needed to push that second.
Turns out I had got to 10cm on the gas and was fully dilated and ready to push. So pointless epidural really. I could still move my legs and still felt the contractions but no pain. I started to push with direction of the mw. Such a good sensation. One u can't actually control. There were 2 midwives in the room that were friends of my mom and they were both incredible. I could see the paediatrician in the corner of the room getting her forceps ready as baby's heart rate kept dropping. I really didn't want that. The mw stood in front of her and said "she's doing it- just let her push". They were having a bit of an argument whilst the other mw was telling me exactly how and where to push. All of sudden they could see the head. I could feel it going back in everytime I stopped pushing. After a few more pushes the head was out (the whole ring of fire thing was not as painful as I thought- I just lay there repeatedly saying ouch). One last massive push and she was out straight into my chest.
The best moment of my life. She was wide awake and looking straight at me. We had skin to skin for an hour before she was weighed in at 6lbs 8oz. She is perfect. I breastfed straight away whilst we took hundreds of photos.
My labour lasted 3hrs with 1hr of pushing. I honestly thought it was about half an hour.
I love all the hormones as its true i have forgotten all the pain and would do it again tomorrow.
