Hi

I had a elective section last Tuesday and they used a beaded prolene stitch which was removed on Monday - day six. Three hours later I went for a wee and my scar burst pretty spectacularly. About 6cm split. I've since been re stitched with dissolvable stitches, maybe four of them. I have a lot of serous fluid leakage, had to have my dressings changed two days on the trot. Scared witless to go for a wee. This isn't how I imagine I would be after my elective (due to gestatonal diabetes). Stomach is far more swollen than it ever was with my first emergency section two years ago. Feel like and look like an old lady what with this and my stupid swollen feet and legs.

Thanks, just needed to rant.

That sounds awful, you poor thing. I had dissolvable stitches and glue with my first and it was fab so hopefully the second lot of stitches will fair better for you.

Hope you feel much better soon x

I was terrified. It popped like you would expect your waters to pop. I was home alone with newborn in my arms so had to put him on the floor, fortunately had him in a blanket at the time. I had to check where the blood had come from, call 999, change my knickers and grabna dressing gown, pack a bag for baby to come to hospital with me, find shoes etc all before the paramedics arrived. There was a car ambulance on the drive and then later a proper ambulance outside the house. It all looked quite dramatic. After the initial pop the bleeding subsided.

Everyone I've spoken to says they are surprised the stitches came out so soon, my mum a former children's nurse says they should of been in for 10-12 days but the midwives and doctors I've seen haven't expressed any concern. I had a keloid scar with dissolvable stitches from my first pregnancy so this was them trying to give me a neat scar. Yah! Like that will happen now.

My doctor took mine out at day 5, and my incision opened as well. Makes a heck of a mess!

Gosh that sounds horrible! Hope it closes up and stays closed for you :flower:

Even the stitshes I had in my arm years ago were left in for 7 days... they were supposed to be taken out in 10, and when they removed the last 3 of the 12 stitches, it started to come open! They butterfly stitched me and I left those on til they wore and fell off!!! I'd be scared as hell if it were my Csect scar!!

I got the glue, and glad I had no issues. So sorry you're going through this. Hope you recover and heal quickly.

Please do go straight to the hospital if you are at all worried again. I had a wound infection after my first emergency c-section. I was really poorly for quite a while and always look back and wish I had gone to hospital sooner rather than waiting.
Hope you have a good recovery x

The midwives I've seen just cluck about me aving a are time but surely the stitches shoud of stayed in longer. The fluid leaking out doesn't seems to have stopped and I changed my dressing myself this morning as a midwife can't get to me until tomorrow. My midwife said its better out than in which doesn't help me in the slightest. I got a little emotional talking to her this morning because it's hard enough coping with a toddler and newborn but now I'm petrified that it will split or not heal properly for weeks. I feel, quite frankly, a gross mess.

Awww I really feel for you. When it is all meant to be wooo hoo I have a scrummy new baby ... you just feel so awful and it is so difficult to enjoy the first few weeks with your baby. I found myself getting scar obsessed after mine 'burst' .. I was constantly checking it for any changes and the stuff that came out was so yucky that it made me feel really ill and not able to care for my baby ... everything seemed like such hard work and not at all how I imagined life with a newborn would be. I felt so disappointed in myself and let down by body (and let down by the hospital - where I later found out I had caught an 'unspecified hospital contacted infection')

Your midwife is correct. The more that comes out, the better your recovery will be. I had to be re-admitted to hospital to have the stuff taken out (yuck)

Make sure your midwife brings lots of new dressings. One tip I remember: when you wash the wound, dry it off with your hairdryer on a cool setting.

Take care of yourself and try to remember that this will only last a few weeks x

I can only imagine how scared you must have been. When I had my emergency section with my DS almost 4 years ago they put staples in my cut. They took them out on day 3 before I left the hospital. Of course I was stitched on the inside but they just left the outside gaping open. They told my DH to look at it to see what it looked like because I would probably panic when I looked at it. Boy were they right. I waited for a couple of days after I came home and then looked with a mirror. I was ready to head for the hospital right then, I told DH OMG I am splitting open. When he looked at it he told me that it looked better than when I came home. I couldn't believe that they just left it open like that! I washed it every day with soap and water and made sure to dry it good with clean towel. I never really had any problems with it. Not even any drainage. I was surprised that it healed so well and I was left with a small scar. Hopefully yours will heal well also.

That's scarey stuff I had my forth section last year and it was good, as my other 3 were not!...my first one was in 1992 the stiches went right across across my belly as my daughter had gone down so far then gotten stuck face up rather than face down the pain was terrible and the recovery was long due to the size of scar!, my next baby was born nonmally a month early i was so proud of myself!...then section no 2 came along this was because of placenta previa so my son was 6wks early i had a prolene bead and thought nothing of it as they had to cut it out, it was so tight along my belly and very painful!, section 3 was not good at all, my son was breech and came 7wks early so they put in staples, well never again, i got mrsa and had an open gap in my tummy for 7wks it was horrible but i got over it in time, then last year i had another son 6wks early, this was defo the best section, they cut above the old mrsa scar and it healed well, good old desolving stiches!...now i have just found out im pregnant with twins!...thought i was havin the menopause at 40 but i had a 5 week scan and no its fraternal twins, im just praying things go ok as i lost triplets back in 1996, hope you you find this info some use and i pray you recover well and enjoy your baby...x

My scar split open gushing bloody water everywhere on day 10, 14, 17 it turned out it was infected and I need antibiotics but this wasn't obvious straight away, but a year on the scar is fully recovered.
