I just went into the hospital for the third time, I had been getting severe headaches and dizzyness and my contractions speed up to 1 min apart with a good deal of pain. after being checked out the ob was amazed at the regularity and strength of the contractions with no cervical change (still high and closed). They ended up admitting me after watching and listening to the baby's heart rate. every time i had a contraction the baby's heart rate would decrease some time very significantly i think the biggest drop they recorded was from 145 to 100 and it took a little while to come back up. They didn't want to try to stop the labor abruptly with drugs but were simply going to watch were it went, they gave me tons of IV fluids and some dextrose to help with the headaches. after several hours the contractions began to slow up and his heart rate began to normalize, they continued to watch me through the next day, were they did some neuro tests to make sure the headaches were just pregnancy related and sent me home in the late afternoon, still having contractions but were now 10-12 mins apart and not as strong. With his heart rate dropping so much and no dilation i'm scared that i might need a c-section. what is the likely hood of that and how difficult is it to recover from. also how can I tell (if at all possible) weather or not the contractions i'm having at home are causing him any distress? how early will they do a c-section if needed, will they ever do one before 40 weeks? (i'm 36 +1 now) I'm really nervous about all this, this is my first and this is all new to me.

I hope you're feeling better today. I'm sure the hospital wouldn't of sent you home if they felt you or the baby were in any danger. But I also believe you should just go with your gut. If somethings telling you somethings not right, it's best to go back to the hospital. Keep checking to see that the baby is moving. Signs of distress is lack of movement. As for needing a c-section, if it's for the best then you'll cope with it just fine in the end. I've had 2 c-sections, with the first being because of the babies heart rate and both went well. Recovery wasn't too bad, just get up and walk as soon as possible. And your almost what they consider full term (37 weeks) so the baby would most likely be fine. I know many babies born at 36 weeks that don't even need nicu.
Hope everything goes well for you. It's scary to go through this especially the first time around. Just follow your gut!
