Hi

My OB scheduled my section for Wednesday Feb.19th which places me at 38 wks and 5 days. At our last apt he suggested he wants to push it to Wednesday Feb.26th which places me 39 wks 5 days which is 2 days before my due date. I'm really upset by this as I've planned and arranged family to travel here to help. His reasoning was strange...said he is concerned about lung development?? Are most sections not scheduled 7-10 days before your due date? I'm 2 days shy of 39 wks is this too early? I'm just super confused when he mentioned lung development but then proceeds to tell me she is fine and very healthy!

My son was born at 36 wks due to PIH and weighed only 3lbs 10oz his lungs were fully developed he only needed NICU to gain weight so why would this baby at 38 wks 5 days not have developed lungs?my 1st OB said they deem babies "medically term" at 36 wks!

Anyone have anything like this happen, what are your thoughts on this? I'm super anxious about going into labour going that close to my due date I thought the whole point of planned sections is to avoid labour?!

In October 2013, the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine deemed that full term is now 39 weeks to 40 weeks and 6 days which is why your OB probably mentioned lung development and pushed your C section date further back. There's a good possibility that your baby probably won't have any issues with lung development, but he might not be willing to take that risk.

I actually had my C section scheduled for after my due date because that was my personal choice, but most doctors will schedule a C section before the due date. Hopefully you won't go into labor before hand, but that shouldn't change whether or not you'll have a C section. Good luck! :flower:

c-sections aren't usually scheduled before 39 weeks. They did just change what is considered full term to 39-40 weeks, and they recommend you wait until week 40 if you can to have your c-section. The extra 2 days can help your babies lung development. I know it's hard with already making plans, but in the long run it's better for you & baby.

As mentioned above the change was likely to cover their butts.. If your child was born with issues that could have been a better outcome had they waited a week you would have legal grounds for a lawsuit. An with the new guidelines they really need to place it as close to 40 weeks as possible. Having said that if a issue comes and they to section you sooner they will. If they pushed it back its likely because they feel its safe to do so.. Have you had any issues in your pregnancy this time?

I know it was convient for when it was before but any extra time in uthro for a baby is always better.

When I had a section for my second son at 38+4 weeks I had to have 2 steroid injections for the lungs. I asked why and they said before 39 weeks taking a baby via c section without labouring first means the babies lungs are sometimes a bit shocked and aren't prepared as they would be afterwards. X
