I had my section pre assessment yday & was reading the leaflet on the way home which mentions having to inject yourself at home for 7 days with anti coagulation medication. I have not heard or read about this in any of my research, did anyone have to do this?

I am also curious about moving about with the catheter in, are you able to get out of bed if it is still in, or do you have to wait until they take it out? Also, does it hurt coming out I am not worried about it going in as I will already be numb. Does the spinal injection hurt too?

I've had two c-sections. With the first, I only had the injections whilst in hospital. With the second, the midwives did my injections for 3 days whilst in hospital and then I injected myself at home for a further 4 days. My cousin gave me a tip- always put the needle in the numb section of your stomach as you can't feel it then. The midwives will show you how to do it properly and it really doesn't hurt.

I was able to move from the bed to the crib with the catheter and you can also carry it with you. Both times it was taken out the next day. It's a bit uncomfortable when it's being taken out it is over in no time.

Good luck!xxx

Have just read your last question about the spinal!

I found it really uncomfortable rather than painful. They put a local anasthetic (sp?) in before the spinal. I felt like the spinal needle was pressing against the vertebrae in my spine, the thought of which made me feel sick! Also they couldn't get it in the right place so had to do it again.

The spinal wasn't as bad as you'd imagine. As PP says it was more un-comfy - like a strong sting. Although that was nothing compared to the contractions every 5 minutes with a back to back baby!

The catheter is left in until you're able to walk around once the spinal wears off. It didn't hurt coming out.

I didn't have any injections at all.

Im still on clexine, will be for another 3 weeks :/ have to do them myself at home, not the most fun job, but needs must and all that. I do look like a bit of a dart board though now, and pretty bruised up.

You can move around with the catheter, you just pick the bag up and waddle off, it is a bit uncomfortable, but it doesn't hurt.

I'm just recovering from my emergency c section that I had this past Thursday.

The spinal actually wasn't too bad. I was extremely sh*ting myself before hand as I hate/petrified of needles, but as PP have said its more uncomfortable than painful.

In regards to the Clexine, I was in hospital for three days so had them done for me there. I'm at home now and do it myself. As I said above I'm petrified of needles, and after I did the first one on my own, its not too bad. Make sure you pinch a roll of fat in your tummy (away from your stitches as that will kill!!!) and inject there. I have got to do this until Thursday.

Again the Catheter is not too bad either! Coming out is a bit uncomfortable, but by this point I was with my baby and feeling the pain of the incision that having the catheter taken out was not important in the grand scheme of things lol!

Good luck and hope all goes well for you! x

I had the clexane self injections for 7 days, first day the MW did it for me then they watched me do the the next 2 days I was still in hospital to check I could do it, and the other 4 I did at home. I won't lie it can hurt a little depending where you put it, definitely do what a PP suggested and see if you have a numb patch on your tummy and do it there. I didn't realise that I had a numb patch til the last day I had my clexane (and that patch is still numb now at 6 weeks pp).

I didn't have a spinal as I already had epidural coz mine was an EMCS so can't help you exactly there but I know I managed to have my epidural fine during horrible contractions, it wasn't painful just uncomfy and then the drugs going in feels cold and strange.

You should be able to move with the catheter if you can carry the bag, but it's usually taken out following morning anyway depending on the time of your section. And no it doesn't hurt coming out, just feels odd.

Just a few tips for having a section that I would have loved to know beforehand;

- buy some peppermint tea as its the only thing I found helped with the trapped wind following being opened up
- please take the stool softener they give you/ask for one if they don't! You may not feel like you need it (I pooped fine at first but after 2 weeks I had the most painfully hard poops that caused an anal fissure, felt like passing glass!!).
- walk (hobble) as soon as you can
- press your buzzer when you need help on the first night, don't try too much too soon
- if you are trying breadfeeding it may make you feel sick when baby is latching (don't know if that was just my own personal experience or not though)

Hope it all goes well!

I've not had a cs but I've been on the blood thinning injections twice a day throughout my pregnancy and will b the same 6 weeks after birth,u b fine u soon get used to them

I'm really confused as to why all you other ladies seem to have had these injections. I didn't have any at all and they were never mentioned.

..........just as a side note - please be aware that peppermint can have a negative effect on milk supply; so if you're wanting to breastfeed try to not drink too much.

I had high blood pressure and was induced so maybe it was due to that with me?

And I didn't know that peppermint affected breast feeding, thanks for the tip for the future!

I was borderline pr-eclamptic in labour so had the high BP too but wasn't induced. Can anyone else shed any light?

A number of things can affect milk supply; peppermint, sage, cabbage, jasmine, oregano, spearmint......these are just a few of the herbs that can decrease supply. Worth knowing. :winkwink::thumbup:

I had a section and have a high bmi, I think thats why im on them, only about 3 weeks left on them now. I look like someone has taken a baseball bat to my stomach.

I didnt have a section, but some of your questions applied to me as I was taken to theatre after giving birth...

The injections really arent as bad as they seem. You can 'stick' them pretty much anywhere in your stomach. I was told to grab a fair chunk of fatty skin, and go there. Silly as it seemed but closing my eyes helped, and just getting it over and done with as soon as possible.

The spinal is uncomfortable, but doesnt hurt. You will have someone (I had a midwife), talking to me throughtout the anaesthetist doing their work. Just keep in mind, that this quite quick thing will lead you to seeing your baby very very soon... :)

The catheter was for me the worst thing. I have been catheterised twice now, and it isnt nice. You can walk with it, I asked for a pillow case when I was walking round so I could put the bag in there. I was told that the catherter could be removed approx 12 hours after surgery had finished (but this may have been the type of surgery I had). It was uncomfortable when removed but didnt hurt.I have worked with catheters for a long time... and the only other thing I would say (or this may just be my obsession), but if they empty the bag, just check that they have closed the tap on the bag. All in all though, it really isnt so bad, and once it is removed, when you go to the toilet that first wee is soooo surreal, you feel like you are peeing forever for some strange reason....

Good Luck :)

Well I had my section & am now home recovering :)

It wasn't as scary as I had imagined, I have actually kind of forgotten whether or not it hurt lol! I do remember that the medication going down my back hurt more than the injection did.

The catheter did not hurt at all coming out, it did feel strange though. I do have to have the injections at home too, hubby is injecting them into my thigh, have little bruises everywhere :p

The first time I got out of bed was ok, until I got almost back to my bed & felt like I was going to faint, worst feeling ever.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby, and glad everything went ok :flower:

With my first I think I had them for maybe 3 days while in hospital and this time it was a week and DH did 2 at home. The second one was not a standard c-section though and I was unable to walk for a little longer so maybe that could be why.
