Hi there,

Me and DH are planning on having a trial seperation for a few weeks/months. Not really sure how long yet.

So anyway we can't afford for us to live seperatly so I need to start claiming benefits. Is it ok to claim while married but not living together?

And another question we live in a private rented house and it costs £950 a month, its a 3 bed house. I've looked up what I'm entitled to for housind benefit in this area and I am allowed a 2 bed house up to £712 a month. Can I still stay here if I top up the £712 I'm allowed with my own money to make it up to what my rent costs even if the house is bigger than I'm allowed?

If anyone could help me I'd really apprieciate it.

thanks xxx

Yeps! I have a three bed house and pay the extra towards the rent!

And im pretty sure you can still claim, so long as you are not living together (Though someone else may no for deffinate) as people who are getting divorced can claim? So i would have thought so, as untill they are divorced they are still married!

xx

Hi, just butting in from 2nd tri -

me and my oh were apart for 4 months last year, although still living together in our house untill he sorted something else. i rang tax credits and they said i CAN still claim as a single parent even though he is under the same roof - so long as we are not together.

i rang to check this as i thought id need to wait til he moved out.

housing benefit prob is just once you arent living together but def ring tax credits and they can do it straight away.

hope this helps, and good luck

x
