5 years ago my brother caught mumps (despite having been vaccinated as a child). Unfortunately it then developed into orchitis and he was very ill, in hospital and had extremely swollen testicals (one more so than the other). Ever since he has worried that this could have affected his fertility and now that he has a serious girlfriend, he wanted to know for sure.
Yesterday he had a test at a clinic which showed that he has a severely low sperm count (1.6 million per millilitre).
Does anyone have any experience of this, or something similar or have any suggestions about what options may be available to my brother and his girlfriend when they want to have children.
Thanks x

Well my dh had mumps twice as a child and has low count.it has been between 20million to 4 million. There is always hope of havin babies aslong as you have one egg and sperm.icsi is the best option and prob the only option with his low count.

Thanks, that is what I have told him. Hopefully if he has another test, the result could be a bit better if it can vary that much. x

Tell him to start taking wellman vits.sa's can vary from test to test.

Unfortunatley my OH had similar problem and varicose vein in testicle too, so less than 1mil per ml, Our only option was ICSI, which luckily for us was successful first time.

He tried Acupuncture/ supplement (loads of diff ones) but because it was medical and not lifestyle related it didn't make any difference.

Depending on you brother and his girlfriends situation I would suggest they get a referral to see a fertility specialist on the NHS, it took nearly a year for us to start treatment and some PCTs are starting to cut funding so suggest they start sooner rather than later if they are considering trying for a pregnancy soon

xxx GOOD LUCK x

We were too young togo on a list where we live.we werent allowed on one untill we were 30+

Ok, I'm very shocked now. My brother has just told me that his girlfriend is pregnant!

Obviously I am delighted for them but am confused as to how this has happened. Is this a miracle baby or could the test he had have been wrong?

She must have conceived about a week before he had the test. They weren't even really trying.

It only takes one sperm!!! If he has 1.6 million per mil and he produces a few mil there are loads to work on that eggy!!

Congrats Auntie :) xxx

I ov each month and all my tests are perfect--nonetheless i have been put on clomid---started yesterday....
DH had a SA....everything was good except morphology which was 8%... il be interested to hear any replies...xxxxxxxx

Hi everyone.

Just shows that miracle's can happen!
When we had no sperm on day of ER our specialist also asked if my husband had mumps when he was little. This seems to me that this could be one of the reasons causing his low sperm count and the other being his Low FSH.
I recommend that everyone who has male infertility issues should have their husband's hormones tested. You could be shocked and there could be a solution to the problem as we discovered with my husband. I probably would have been pregnant long ago if we had known.
Good luck to you all!

Thanks for your comments ladies.

Brillbride - I will certainly keep you updated. I am so sorry to hear about your miscarriages and I hope that you get a successful outcome soon. I also pray that my brother and his girlfriend have a happy ending as I know how much they want this baby. x

Thanks cat 81-- I am sure everything will go well for them :)xxxx
