Hi,

Finally getting round to this! Sorry its a bit long!

Had to get induced on the 17th of October, at 41+5. Had 2 sweeps and the midwife said I was not very favourable (later advised me she thought id end up with a section!).

So arrive at the hospital at 8pm. Was examined and advised she could break my waters but it would be uncomfortable, so got the prostin tablet inserted. Was left on the CTG monitor and started to show tightenings within 20 mins. They just felt like period cramps. Decided to put the tens machine on now, and it was helpful when ramped up to full power!

Hubby was advised to go home at night so at 1030 I walked him to the front door. At this point i was starting to get really quite uncomfortable. So when i arrived back at the ward I asked for some painkillers. I said 'I know its early but i really could use something now'. Got paracetamol and went for a bath. Bath was soothing for 5 mins, but then suddenly the pain ramped up a crazy amount!! I was rolling around and just didnt know what to do with myself! Finally rolled out of the bath and crawled back to my bed. I had to stop in the corridor doubled over to breathe through the contractions!

So i buzzed MW again, and said the bath had made things so much worse, so she decided to check me. When i finally got a gap from the pains, she advised i was 6cm at 1130pm! I was quite surprised! But the contractions were so strong and so close together, every 1-2 minutes. If they were further apart i think i may have coped better but i just couldnt catch my breath in between!

So the MW called hubby (he had been in bed for 30 mins) and I was taken up to labour ward. Got there and was given gas and air. This did help a little, but I was on it so much, I asked for the epidural at this point.

I was advised to go to the bathroom so started to walk over but ran back for the G&A half way through! At this point hubby arrived and looked petrified lol. Got to the loo and had my show, (no mistaking it this time!).

Back to the room and the aneasthetist arrived. He began to site the epidural but as my contractions were so close together it was taking ages. He hit a nerve the first time but got there in the end. The relief was great and while I could still feel the contractions, they were like pressure instead. And I could still move my legs so it wasnt like i imagined!

This did slow things down somewhat though. I think it must have been about 1am at this point and they didnt check me again until about 4. Despite me saying I felt like my body wanted to push. The response was 'oh your probably fully dilated' but they still wouldnt check.

At 4am I was examined again and was fully dilated, and membranes were bulging. The midwife made a funny face and i thought something was wrong down there, but she was just worried about it popping in her face! She broke the waters and it exploded every where! At this point MW did say baby was back to back, which explains the pain and feeling to push early.

I was told we had 2hrs before pushing to allow the head to come down a bit more. So at 6am we started to push. This was a weird sensation as I felt like it was just a practice or something, and with the epidural i couldn't feel it exactly. I felt contractions in the top of my bump when i was on my back, but pressure below on my side. So pushed on my side for a while.

Baby's HR was getting a bit high so they advised doctor may come in soon and I had 2 hrs to push baby out. So i guess nearly 2 hrs passed as the doc was there and watching at the end. Then he decided he was going to get the venteuse (sp) and the second he walked out the room a big contraction came and I just pushed her out at 756am!! I didn't consciously decide to push harder, it was just what my body did!

The stretching was a weird sensation and part of me did want to resist pushing as when they said the head is nearly there i felt like it was so tight that her head must have been at the widest point!

The 3rd stage only lasted 7 mins with the injection, and i had a second degree tear which needed stitching.

Had skin to skin for 1.5hrs and she fed from me for 30 mins (eventually). She was then weighed and was 7lbs6oz.

She is over a week now and cant believe how much she changes every day! We had a few nights where she was screaming blue murder until 5 or 6 am and we couldnt figure out why, but she now gives us a 5-6 solid kip at night time :happydance:

Childbirth was one of the scariest things I could imagine beforehand, and if I can do it, anyone can!! If you asked me now I'd say id do it again, but for a few days after it I couldn't have even joked about it! Its hard work, but totally worth it!

Thanks for sharing hon! It sounds like your induction went really well! Congrats again on your little girl xxx

Thanks girls!

Cant believe how fast it was and very little intervention, think id chose that over a longer more gradual labour!

Hi shiney, so happy to her your little girl arrived safe and sound x

Thanks Kitty, I see you had your LO too, congrats!!! We got there eventually x

Yes we did and it feels great to finally have Rory here, funny he had only been here 6 days and I can't remember life without him!
