We have a holiday planned to Miami starting feb 27 I'm currently in Canada. There are rumours of this Zika virus spreading to Miami. I'm terrified. Would u chance it? Do u think there's a real danger? I'm not sure what to do! Thinking of cancelling our trip :(

I just saw this article
https://www.10tv.com/content/storie...alth-emergency-for-zika-in-four-counties.html
I get nervous about stuff like this, if it was me I wouldn't go because I would be to worried and not be able to enjoy myself. I couldn't take the risk.

I'd have to research abit more about the risk. I was reading it can cause the birth defects in early pregnancy which I'd assume was under 12weeks.
I'm not familiar with the areas or risk as I'm from Australia. I'd heard there have been a few diagnosed cases in Australia from people coming back to the country from overseas but most of the mozzies here do not carry the virus.

I understand that in all the cases confirmed in Florida thus far the virus was acquired abroad in one of the affected countries. So I would think at the moment it's still unlikely that the local mozzies there carry it and the risk is very low. How long it will be before they start carrying it I of course wouldn't know, not sure how quickly it spreads. I would think that the US is much better prepared to tackle it than most central and south american countries, and you get AC everywhere.

I've been following this closely as I have to travel to Florida for work next week. I don't think there's much risk, if any, but as I'm going there for work I'll be spending probably almost 100% of my time there indoors. I spent a week there for work in October and didn't get bitten and wasn't using a repellent at any point.

I wouldn't cancel the trip if it were me, just protect yourself and the cases being reported are from people having traveled to affected countries lately!!! And beyond that I think the biggest fear is for people under the 20 week mark. But since there isn't much known about it that still doesn't reassure me. I'm in texas and it's hot here and we still have mosquitos . I'm just trying to do the best I can to avoid being bitten!!

Yeah. U know what u girls are right. It's just not enough of a concern to cancel my trip. I'll be 26 weeks by the time I go and all cases reported over there are from travelers that got bitten in South America then went back to Miami. This is just such bullshit. Always something to stress about honestly I can't wait till this pregnancy is over and baby is here safely xx

Personally I would cancel but I'm also so damn paranoid about the virus lol.
I think my biggest worry would be what if the people who came back with it to Miami/Florida had got bitten before they were completely cured...because I assume that's how it spreads in the first place. And considering it's spread so explosively already i probably just wouldn't chance it.
They do say it affects women under 20 weeks mostly but then again seems like they know so little about the virus anyway at this point.

I'd cancel too. It's been really rainy that way so there will be more mosquitos. I wouldn't chance it. I think you'd spend your time there worrying.

Zika virus has been around since the 1940's. They aren't even sure that microcephaly is caused by zika virus! Florida is not on the list of do not travel to from cdc. I'd just do your own research and decide what you are comfortable with!!
