I'm unable to get opinions on this from friends and family as we are not telling anyone the name we have chosen for our daughter (Isla)

I'm Scottish but live in Australia. I know the name is not unheard of but I know how annoying it is to have your name mispronounced (mines is Cerise) and am wondering whether we stick with the traditional - which I don't think looks all that nice - or maybe use Iyla instead - but then I'm not a fan of 'alternate' spellings of names as it can look a bit trashy sometimes

Any ideas? And do you think it's a nice name :)
We wanted something short to go with our long surname, something sweet and girly but not overly popular or way out there.

I see your point but would spell it Isla regardless. It's a short name, so whenever your girl introduces herself she could always spell it out easily. Love the name by the way!

A lot of people here will know the name because of the actress isla fisher

Definitely Isla. If I saw 'Iyla' written down I wouldn't know how to say it!

To be honest I'm not a fan of alternative spellings either. I'd stick to 'Isla'. I think it's a lovely name, very pretty :)

I wouldnt change it Isla is the orginal spelling anf it isnt an uncommon name so people who misspell must be stupid lol

It's a beautiful name and spelt just the way it's meant is perfect! People don't spell island IS-LAND and they'll better know how to say Isla spelt like that than the other way. When I saw that I immediately thought if I didn't know what name it was I wouldn't have a clue how to say it :flower:

Definitely Isla - not keen on alternative spellings. My daughter Caitlin has traditional spelling but we still get katelyn or kaitlynne etc!

Same goes for Niamh, Eilidh and Jamie for a girl (we have a jaime, jaymee and a jaymi at school)

Isla is a lovely name

I am a big fan of unique and alternate spelling for names. Two of my 4 children have names with a unique/unusual spelling and have never had a problem with mis-prononciation, nor do I think it looks trashy.
The name Isla is beautiful but your alternate spelling Iyla is more appealing in my eyes. I know I am probably in the minority on this thread but that is my opinion. :flower: xx

I voted Iyla, I'm having an 'Isla' but spelling her name 'Aila' I prefer alternate spellings xx

I would stick with Isla - love it!! I know a few people who have names their baby Isla and it hasn't been mispronounced.

My daughters best friend (age 7) is Isla, and we are in Australia. It does unfortunately get mispronounced as IS-la from time to time. She does competitive swimming and gymnastics and it is often mispronounced over the loudspeaker. At school there is no issue, and once people know it, they don't forget. I honestly don't know how people get it wrong. Isla Fisher is well known, and there's the "island" connection too. Honestly, I wouldn't mess with the spelling. Yes, you may have to do some correcting over the years, but the name is lovely.

Lol, my sister had a baby 3 days ago and named her Ayla...and a few people have pronounced it Isla....you can't win!

As a couple of other pps have said: Isla Fisher is a fairly famous Australian so i would have thought the majority of people wouldn't have a problem. I would stick with Isla.

Also, yes I think it's a beautiful name. It's my DD middle name.

Hey! I had this same debate, almost, and now i have a 9 week old daughter called isla :) I am an american expat who lives in sweden so isla isnt popular in either of those places. To make matters worse most of my friends speak spanish so of course they would say eesla. We debated between isla and ayla. Ayla is not an aternate spelling but rather a turkish name pronounced the same way. In the end we did not use it because ayla is also a hebrew name prononced to rhyme with kayla and it is getting popular in north america. I have been annoyed that no matter how many times i have corrected my hv (swedish) she still says eesla but other than that no probs and i dont regret our choice. Btw isnt isla fisher australian? surely australians would know the name?

Deffo stick with Isla.. Ill admit I had to ask my mum how to say it when i saw it on my friends short list for her baby girl.. but I really like it!

I also know the feeling about people not being able to say your name..
my names Cherise - similar to you. but people are forever calling me Cerise!!!!

I'm sorry if I'm not helping, which I'm probably not, but I'm genuinely curious as I've seen this name on B&B before. :) So, "Isla" is pronounced like "Eye-la"? I always thought "Eese-la" but wondered. It's a pretty name either way.

Yes Saphira, pronounced "Eye-la". xx

Really! That's mad cos everyone always calls me Cherise and it does my head in - I'm like 'where's the H??'

Looks like we'll be sticking with Isla. I do like the Turkish name name and spelling someone posted 'Ayla' but worried it would be mispronounced to rhyme with Kayla (which is how I'd probably say it)
