My son had his 4 month vaccines on Tuesday. He was OK but had a fever as expected with the new MenB vaccine so was given paracetamol. He's been unsettled all last night, screaming out whimpering and hot. He's woken up today soaking with sweat, his leg has a huge lump (much bigger than other two times) and its really red. I expected some redness but not quite this much plus its slightly weepy. I thought it was the medicine crusted over but I've cleaned it and noticed a little more since. Would you phone the doctor? I can't compare with my daughter as she never got the menB vaccine xxx

I would see the doctor, just for peace of mind

The advice give to me was if the swelling was bigger than 50p or increasing in size then to call them

personally I'd call the GP with that reaction, poor guy it looks sore :(

For something like that, yes, I'd take him in to see the GP. It could be infected, which is why it's so sore.

Thank you. I've phoned and just waiting on a call back. Hopefully they see him and don't just fob me off xxx

I hope things have settled down now and the doctor eased your worriesx

Thank you. Seen GP today who said it was a localised reaction. She said it will probably get worse before it gets better and his yearly vaccines will be done in the hospital to monitor for any allergic reaction. I've to continue with paracetamol to reduce his fever and keep randomly applying a cold compress. Poor wee mite has been so off today and just wants cuddles xxx

That's it now xxx

Can't see as well in that pic, bit dark! Poor little fella tho!

What a shame for your poor wee boy, it looks like it has gotten worse but hopefully the paracetamol will kick in soon. Also good that any future jags will be done in hospital too just to be sure. Lots of hugs and kisses for your wee one tonight from mum they always sort everything :)x

Yep, he's been on me all day. Even let him have boob to sleep (which I don't usually do) my poor wee guy. Yeah its now the size of my fist and the swelling has increased. Just have to keep a good eye on him. Xxx

How is he in himself now? What's his temp?
I might just be a worrier but honestly I'd take him to your local children's a&e and just get him checked over again. Especially with him being so young and it getting worse.

He's just his usual 'after vaccine' self. Grumpy, sleepy but wanting cuddled. That sort of thing. His temp was 38.1 but an hour after calpol was 37.6 so its OK. Its not as red this morning but still a huge lump. He slept his usual 11-8:30 so I'm sure he's OK now xxx

God that's ghastly! Mine had a reaction to the plasters they use, which gave her a red, round, bumpy patch, but never anything like this! Poor little guy. :O

Well even after this length if time my son still has a bruised leg. I went to the practice manager to complain as I believe (as registered general nurse) that the injection wasn't done properly. He still squeals if its bumped and he's been unsettled since. I know he need his next lot of vaccines but om terrified of doing it to him. She didn't seem too bothered which meant I walked away in shock. HV tried to tell me its common but I can honestly say that in my 9 years of nursing I've never seen anyone bruise like that from in intramuscular injection. My poor wee dude! Xxx

His wee bady

Poor baby!!! I'd be upset, hope this doesn't happen to him next time :(

Poor thing! I got a few bruises like that when I had to have daily blood thinning injections for 6 weeks post birth but that's because I was totally inexperienced at doing injections. They would last for ages as well. Definitly not something you would expect from a routine vaccine!
