Should I push for a lap and hystoscopy?

Hi all,

I could so with some advice before my next appointment with the specialist in a couple of weeks. We've been trying nearly 2 years. I have had an hsg and scan (both normal), dh has a normal sperm count and my 21d prog tests have come back half good and half bad, but in hindsight I think the bad ones were more likely mistimed. I am on 3rd month of clomid, and at the last appt we were told our next options would be IUI or IVF - both of which we'll have to pay for.

I'm wondering why I haven't been offered a lap and or hystoscopy. What if I have endo or something else going on in there that would mean the IVF won't work? Was anyone else in my poition offered one? Should I push for one when I see the consultant in a couple of weeks?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Jan.

Hi Jan.

In my personal opinion yes, I do think you should push for a Lap. I'd also ask for a Dye test to make sure you don't have blocked tubes. I had to do the exact same thing with my Gyno. But all in all, when you do go to a fertility clinic they will do a Lap and Dye anyway, so it's best to get it all done beforehand so you aren't held up with IVF or IUI.

I really had to put my foot down with my Gyno, as he just wanted to shove Clomid down my throat time and time again, until I finally said enough is enough!

Lots of luck.

Hi Ney Ney. Thanks for the advice. I've had a dye test (that's the same as an hsg right?) which was normal. Since I started the thread I've been googling this and am starting to wonder if a lap is just another thing that the NHS don't offer.

Sorry Jan, missed the part where you mentioned the HSG, yes I believe that is the same, it's a scan which should have checked for blockages.

Sorry, can't help with the NHS as I'm not too familiar with that seeing as how I'm in Australia. I wish you all the best though.

Thanks Ney Ney.

Anyone from the UK know whether Laps are offered routinely on the NHS in the absence of a diagnosis? I've read on the internet that a diagnosis of unexplained infertility can't be made until they've been in there to have a look, but also that it is not offered anymore.

I would get a lap/hysterscopy. I had an HSG that came back normal/clear, and with my hysterscopy they found out that my uterus was adhered to the other side like a donut!!! Goes to show that those tests aren't as accurate as they might say. They said it was from my c-section 4 years ago!!! I just had the lap done about 8 months ago? So, it should have clearly shown up!

Hi,
I have just had a lap done on the nhs but will have to go private for ivf as I already have a child. The dye did go through but I have adhesions from my c/s and laparotomy
to remove an ectopic. These would not have shown on just the dye test. I would push for it as it will give them the full picture x good luck with it all x
