Should I still wake for night feed?

Amelia is four weeks old on Monday. She has always woke every 3-4 hours at night to feed, just like daytime but tonight she has gone 6 hours and is still sleeping.. She didn't have a vast amount of milk in the day and of course I am worried she's not getting enough. Was initially told to wake her at night. She has a cleft palate and our specialist nurse wanted to make sure she was getting her amounts. But she has been gaining weight. She had gained 9oz in 5 days at her last weigh in at 16 days. And she has lots of wet nappies.

Should I wake her or leave her to sleep? She may be too weak to wake? Worrying like hell here.

I never woke my little one for feeds, they gradually cut down on their own during the night especially when FF :) u know how much she's having at each feed and if u think she got enough in the day I wouldn't worry.

Xxx

I have a clefty too. If she's gaining she is absolutely fine to sleep through. Just keep an eye on that weight. But honestly,as long as she's gaining she's absolutely fine :) I asked my cleft nurse the same question. Also worth noting, your HV will often have ZERO idea and so give an overly cautious answer on these things. x

By the way, a 9oz gain in 5 days for a clefty = AWESOME. Where they work so much harder to feed a lot of the time the gain is a lot less than that,I don't think Barnaby has ever gained that much in a week :) Unless she goes a couple of weeks without really any gain or loses weight at all you have really no worries. x

Yeah, my cleft nurse has been really impressed with her weight gain. Hoping she's gained again this week.

My daughter is 3 months and started sleeping through the night without a bottle at around 1 month. I never wake her for a feed.

My daughter was prem - for the first couple of months I was told to regard four hours as the MAX I was allowed to leave her between feeds and if she hadn't wanted one by then - to wake her and give her one regardless. Once her weight gain stabilised and she really started to take off and start making up for lost time - they started to take the line that if she wanted to drop feeds in the night - take the lead from her.

But yeah I'd second the "interesting" advice that HVs can give and ask the people actually dealing with her cleft - I found that in the case of prem babies - the local HVs had such wildly different ideas about what to do differently and the same that it was easiest just to nod politely and smile attentively and then go off and ask the prem baby organisations for a slightly more informed line of advice.

If she's gaining weight I'd leave her, if she was hungry she'd wake!

Since she only gained 1oz this week I think I will start waking her after 4 hours in the night again.
