Erm... I'm going to sound like a total moron here! But I just saw a flip in person for the first time. Everyone has been raving about them, so I was excited to finally see what the deal was. I think I had my suspicion confirmed....

They are basically just a prefold and cover, right???

(That is my dumb question! :haha: )

And if they are just a prefold and cover, what is all the rave about??

I don't know, but I want to know too! I guess it is the fact that it has a disposable inner as a possibility? But couldn't you just order the disposable inners and use them with any other cover? Or is it that the fit is good? I hear they are made by BumGenius...??

:)

Haha yes! Well sorta If youa re using the organic inserts then yes, I bought the stay dry so it's like a suedecloth topped microfiber insert. Then the cover. I also use the disposable inserts. When I use prefolds though I don't trifold them, I actually put them on then a cover over it

Yeah, they are BG. TBH, they look just like a AIO PUL BG shell, with a bit of material flap to hold the insert in. Basic cover, right??

The insert I saw looked very lush, though. It was an organic one. But you could just get the inserts and use with any cover, I would think?

Those flips won't fit Otter as he is too big. I know they say they go to 35 lbs, but he hardly fits the BG AIO OS I have used on him already. And the flip looks to be the same size and make.

Oh! Cross posted with M3C!

I have been considering looking into prefolds and covers and they seem like they would be easier for drying/washing.

So, the flips are popular... what are other good prefold/cover brands?? Esp ones that make extra larges!

Oh! And M3C, what is the difference between what you do with prefold and using a fitted and cover/wrap??

My personal favorite cover are Thirsties, they run big too. I know Hayden's pretty small but the mediums are still big on him unless there is a big fitted under it like GMs...and even then the tabs still overlap but the butt is filled out from the diaper.

A prefold isn't as absorbent as a fitted, or nearly as bulky. I have pics for comparison if you wanted to see how they fit diff with the fold I use. But they are really inexpensive, and I actually quite like them. Prefolds are def easier to wash, it's just cotton, no special rules really.

Ok let's see what I have :)

This is Hayden at about 4mo

Ok can't really see it in this one but I saw it and had to share haha

I know I have some of him in bigger sizes but I'm not finding them right now. But the way I fold them they are very trim, which I like. I do love my fitteds but sometimes they are really bulky

AAHH!! Look how adorable he was!!! :cloud9:

So, basically you just put the prefold on without folding... use that little triangle thingy (what are they called again??) and put a wrap over them?? That sounds super easy! And cheaper, too!

What are the best prefolds?

Well you take the prefold and do it in thirds, then fold it out like this
https://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/mommyof2co/Feb%202008/step3.jpg

Then you put them on there, pull it up between their legs and you spread out the front part some, and you pull the back part around like it's tabs kwim? Then you use the snappi :)

I personally think greenmountaindiapers.com have the BEST prefolds, that's what those are, we have 3 diff sizes of them. Alot of people like Little Lions too but I bought some and I really didn't like them, they were longer instead of wider and I really couldn't get a good fit, the rise was sooo long on Hayden...didn't like them for us at all

The Flips suit us better than other prefolds I have tried as the BG shape fits really well on Freya, so I was quite pleased that they are so similar (the Flips are a bit roomier, she is on a smaller popper size in them). Also I use AIOs 99% of the time, so it's nice to have something that dries a bit faster, lol. :)

I love the flips, the stay dry are really slim (need wrap on smallest rise) and the organics are fab for overnight. (organics are med rise for us) so i have a cover of each colour set up for the inserts.

all the other systems similar to these are sized (smart nappy/bambino mio) i already have 6 of each insert and tempted to buy another set whilst they're on offer.

Hmm.. Didn't realize the flip was bigger than the bg aio os. Maybe I will have to see how roomy it is on Otter.

Someone else mentioned to me that I am likely having such trouble getting a good fit as Otter has UBER chunky thighs. He does have that! So, I need to search out what works best for him before I invest too much more $$ in it.

Thanks, m3c, for the mini tutorial. I think I will try a wrap and prefold at some point. Just gotta figure out which one!

Yeah I've noticed they are a bit roomier, I think it's because there is nothing sewn into the cover that doesn't stretch you know? So the elastic in the cover can stretch more.

But thirsties do go to a higher weight so if the flips didn't work. They have 2 diff types now, these are the ones I have, I haven't tried their new duo

That lady is wonderful to order from if you haven't before, free shipping on everything and she has great customer service

I find the leg elastic on the flips much lighter too, (it does contain poo ok) the aios are lined and the elastic seems bulkier iygwim

Lil Q is now 14lbs14.5ozs, both the flip and the aio fasten on the same setting (one popper spare either side of the centre sizing popper) but the leg/thigh allowance is different on both. the Flip is def looser, so i wouldn't have thought chunky thighs would be an issue.

I haven't tried the flips on him yet. But my friend is going to lend me one of her covers tomorrow to size on him. It is zinnia so I hope Otter doesn't hate me for putting him in hot pink! :haha:

The one that mentioned the chunky thighs thought I was having trouble with AIOS because of it and thought covers with fitteds/prefolds might work better.

Otter is 25 lbs and just over 28 inches, so is very big for a 6 month old!

He's caught up to Hayden in weight! Hayden varies from 25-26 depending on the day, my child won't grow anymore though lol.

Mama's milk is doing him good! :D

Will definitely be looking into those thirsties!

I notice they are all solid colors, but some good colors. Why is it so hard to find covers in fun prints??? :dohh:

haha! Hayden is such a cute little guy, though! And I'd bet he is way taller than Otter.

Otter is about the 90 centile for bf boys on height... but OVER the 100 centile for weight! That translates into an uber chunky, very solid, square little boy! :haha:
