Bella can hold the handles on her sippy cup but she cant tip it to drink out of it. My friend said her lo was the same and to try a straw cup so i did and she took to it well.....a little too well in fact and actually chokes on it because she doesnt know when to stop! My mum then told me not to usea straw cup cause its bad for her teeth. She still has bottles so i didnt think it would be that bad atm but should i go back to the hard tipped sippy cup. Also when can i expect her to stop drinking too much that she chokes. She has made herself sick before cause she just cant stop!

I think either would be fine, just depends on what works better for you. As long as you're only giving water (not juice) in the straw cup, it won't have any effect on her teeth and I read some research awhile ago that showed straw cups were actually best for speech development as they strengthened a certain muscle group. We use sippy cups for water and straw cups for milk. Honestly, my daughter didn't really get the hang of the sippy cup until around 9 months. Like your daughter, she didn't really understand that she had to tip it up to drink from it. Just lots of practice and also offering it to her to play with in the bath helped. One day it just clicked and it probably will for your LO too. That said, I'm a big fan of straw cups. If you're just using them for water or milk and not sugary drinks and brushing her teeth regularly, it shouldn't cause any problems. We use the Momma straw cup, which has a non-spill straw that I think is actually hard to suck anything out off. You might try a different type of cup or straw to see if you can slow her down a bit so she doesn't choke. Otherwise, it just might be a matter of her getting used to it. She'll eventually figure it out on her own anyway.

Thank you. She doesnt have any teeth yet but no we only offer water and formula. I have given her a cup to play with and she just bashes it about. Will continue though as she has to figure it out sometime. She chokes on food and water. She just takes far too much and doesnt know when to stop! Scares me hence i have avoided blw as i cant handle the choking and puking.
