...and it couldn't come soon enough for us.

Joseph has been struggling a lot with acid reflux, colic and opening his bowels.

He's on Ranitidine, Lactulose, Sytron (for his iron, which could be 'clogging' him up) and we're also adminstering Gripe water and infacol, which the latter seems to offer no help.

He's constantly groaning and can go days without filling his nappy.

Three of four visits to the doctors and one hospital visit later and we're no closer to any answers, so his consultant, Dr Tin, wants to get his hands on him.

I just hope they figure out how to settle my poor little boy down!

We just discovered SMA Staydown formula a few weeks ago. I've never witnessed a normal baby nappy til now we use this! I am so made up and if hes taking formula I couldnt recommend it enough! And we use all the medicines you mentioned, yet we've never ever needed lactolase since!

Is he on Gaviscon at all?

Hi!

He's not on Gaviscon, no, as he's currently on Enfamil A.R. which is designed to do all that gaviscon does, and all that SMA Staydown does!!

Hmmmm....Its a nightmare huh? We've gone through so many different cans of milk its unreal, costing us a bomb lol!

I hope you find some answers!!!

SB22 being that Alex was early why did they not put her on Nutri-Prem2?? I have always had this milk and i got it from the doctors on prescription.

Aww poor little man!! My girls used to go days without pooing because of the milk so they said that was common but we didnt have any other problems other than that. I hope you get your answers tomorrow

Laura

Alex came home on EBM and because she was big enough i was fine to carry on on regular formula when i was ready as she is prescribed multivitimins and iron, so i guess that makes up 4 it?

Bloody hope so anyway.

Ohhh right yep! I think that would be why lol  x

good luck tomo Joseph and family hope you get some answers soon xx

Good luck with your appointment, I really hope you get answers. Reflux is nasty, I hated it and my LO suffered terribly. Thankfully it does not last forever, we stopped Emily's medicines last week and her reflux problem seems to have gone away in time for her 8 month assessment...

HI Guys,

A bit miffed to be quite honest with you. He's now been placed on Gaviscon also which would thicken the milk and eliminate acid but thats what the Enfamil does. However, he's on Lactulose to thin things out cos he can't poo! Surely, all this medicine, along with Ranitidine and Sytron, are all going to contradict each other and get us nowhere!?

On the plus side, the Physio is very happy with his joints and his hand-to-mouth movements. He is becoming visibly aware to lights and shadows and also reacts very well to sounds. But his eyes still do 'scan' the room before he can fixate on anything. The physio seemed to have thought he should be smiling by now, but he isn't...

All in all, a luke-warm visit to the hospital as I genuinely don't feel as we have any more answers. But happy with the Physio report!:happydance:

Gaviscon doesnt eliminate any acid. It is purely a feed thickener :( You cant use it in thick milks either.

You are right, the meds contridict each other and Gaviscon is certainly going to make the problem worse.Iron and Gaviscon do cause trouble with nappies! Alexs nappies were literally like playdough. I kid you not.

Offer some water between feeds and see how you get on, but push on if you dont get any results.!

He takes water maybe twice a day, about 4ml, but he really does not like it!!:nope:

I ain't no doc, but I'd probably, at this stage, love to see him on a normal baby formula (which would maybe allow his passing to become more 'normal), place him on Gaviscon to help his discomfort and then have the lactulose on hand in case things get any worse!! But hey, I don't have 'phd' after my name!:dohh:

You need to use a 'normal' formula with Gaviscon Joesephs Daddy.

I hope you get somewhere, its troublesome!

I know. But, the Enfamil was prescribed to him and they're not looking to change it!

sorry to hear you've had a lukewarm appointment! Physio is great-but the feeding thing sounds like a nightmare.

We had the same problem with Brooke, and eventually I decided to just do my own thing. I was sick of her being sick, constipated and hurting.

I asked to be referred again and went back to the consultant who eventually put Brooke on lactose-free milk from the pharmacist. she gets it on prescription.

Bizarrely enough, Brookes reflux just stopped after giving her the milk. Just like that-literally! I was a bit gobsmacked  but its obviously worked. I dont think she is TRULY lactose intolerant-just couldnt handle it in huge amounts. she has cows milk yoghurts and iv been VERY slowly introducing cows milk into her porridge and into beakers. She's still on Pepti-junior (her prescription milk) now at 1, and I have no intention of stopping it anytime soon.

Perhaps you could talk to your consultant again about it and see what he thinks? I was concerned about changing her milk again, but it really seemed to just literally flick a switch and suddenly I had my happy, contented baby back (and no gaviscon, ranatadine, domperidone, infacol etc etc. . . . to lug about either!!)

Good Luck whatever you decide. x

A doctor suggested reintroducing Gaviscon to Alexs feeds on Saturday- i cant believe i had to correct her that you cant use it in thickened milks. Some people! :nope:

Could be worth a change in milks, the specialists milks do work wonders and take a lot of hassle out of it!

I havent ever had a problem with their feeds which sounds pretty lucky and I also dont know much about gaviscon and what else but the twins were on Nutri-prem2 and they didnt need anything else with theirs.

Sorry to hear it didnt go as you had hoped but well done Joseph on the physio report!!!!

sorry your appointment didnt go as well as you had hoped :( :hugs:

Hi there i'm new to all this but can totally understand where your coming from. My lo is now 7 weeks old and thriving in terms of weight but it has been an absolute nightmare with her and the doc has been pretty unsupportive, thinking I'm just a neurotic mummy!!!!. But its tough work, you just have to push them on it as your the only one to fight for your little one and you'd do anything ti alleviate their distress. My lo is now on dr brown bottles (Size 2 which she gets frustrated at some times?), infacol, ranitidine and enfamil ar. With huge improvement but still distressed at times and will not tolerate her back at all!!!! She nevr really threw up, more silent reflux which I think is neraly harder to get sorted. But know where your coming from they wanted me to change back from enfamil ar to 'what she was settled on.........' eh was never settled, that was after only 48 hrs trial than wanted to add in gaviscon, which cant be added to enfamil ar.....honestly its a battle in a minefield out there but we'll all get there eventaully!!!!
If anyone has advice on teat sizes for thicker formula would greatly appreciate it. Cheers
