Sma staydown is a real ~€{+~€| to mix. I've found best results from rolling for at least 30 seconds, whisking with a fork then leaving in some warm water for a while, then repeating the process. But I don't have 10/15mins in the night and the night feed is getting frustrating with teats clogging often. Anyone got any tips? We're considering getting a thin whisk or stirrer for it, but I'm finding that the feed where I leave it to stand for a bit better so far.

If anyone finds this thread later and wonders if we ever solved it, well kind of. Whisks helped a little but only when the bottle was left to sit. So yesterday we were in ikea and saw some handheld milk frothers for £1. Figured it was worth a shot. It really was.

It still works best if the bottle is left sitting but we've had far less traumatic bottles since we started using it, even last nights late bottle was barely plagued by clogged teats. wish we'd found this before wasting money trying a different bottle out...

What we do is roll the bottle to get the powder mainly mixed. Then mix again using the frother and let it froth (sometimes we've found it doesn't majorly froth, other time its like cappuccino). If day time then leave it to sit, if night skip straight to next step. Stir frothy milk slowly with a fork until it all returns to a liquid consistency. Milk flows far better through teats and ds is now taking an extra ounce as he's not so tired battling clogged bottles.

This doesn't stop the starch thickening in the teats if baby decides to be lazy over bottle, but you just have to pinch those bits out.

Holy crap! I don't use this formula but that's a bunch of work just to mix it!
I'm glad you've found something that works for you! I'm surprised the formula doesn't come with some elaborate mixing machine or something lol!

He's such a happier baby after starting this milk that I put my full brain power into it (not much brain obviously after 2 kids :winkwink:). Thankfully he's pretty scheduled on feeds in the day so it's easy to start mixing it a while before feeds. A bit harder when out and about. I'd rather have happy baby any day though.

Strangely I never had a problem mixing this milk. We just swirled it for 15 seconds or so and it mixed fine. I spoke to SMA and they confirmed that you can mix it with room temp milk (it's what they recommend on their website for night time) which is what I did. I only used chilled water a few times. We used tommee tippee variflow teats with it and never had a clogged one. Glad your Lo is more settled on it x

Glad you never encountered the mixing problem. I've seen some sites suggesting its a problem in hard water areas. We've definitely got hard water here. Variflow definitely seems the way to go but my lo is not interested at all

Have you tried filtering the water before you boil and cool it? That's what we did as our water is very hard too. Maybe it would be worth trying a different bottle brand with a fast flow teat. How long has your lo been on it? I only ask because after a few weeks we had problems with constipation, but found that 2oz of cool boiled water given throughout the course of the day helped. x

I haven't. I'm on the case with that now. Always thought you weren't meant to use filtered water but it seems that's just about using it straight from filter. Which I wouldn't have done. We've had a filter boxed up new since dd was born. Der. Looks like hard water may have been the reason I had issues with aptamil too before the switch.

We've tried Tommee tippee and avent with normal teats and variflow, but he seems happiest with dr browns. That's why I'm desperate to solve the clogging problem!

He's been on it a week. He got a little bunged up but he's pooing fine now, just a little more formed than before but he's no trouble passing it. Been worried about possible constipation so am happy with that too. Will keep boiled water as an option is he stops going though.
