Due to Reduced Fetal Movements, my induction was scheduled for 40+3, wednesday the 27th february! With DS1, my induction was very quick and I went in to hospital this time around with stupid expectations that this induction would also be over and done with pretty quickly...oh how wrong I was ![haha :haha: :haha:](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/haha.gif)
So, on wednesday me and OH made our way to the hospital and arrived for 3.30pm. We were shown to a bed and told some one would be with us shortly...well, so eone finally came round to us at 7.30pm! I was given an internal exam and told I hadn't started to dilate (despite being told the day before that I was 2cm!) yet at all and was given a pessary called Propess. The midwife explained that this will be left in for 24hours and then I would be reviewed for progress at that point...I could have cried. Basically they were not going to check me untill 7.30pm the following day, unless I went into labour before then of course.
That night was pretty uneventful, I had a few niggles but nothing major, managed to grab about 3 hours sleep all in all. I was up and out of bed by 5.30am on the thursday bouncing on a ball trying to encourage some action! It seemed to work because by 6am I was contracting every few minutes and they were lasting about a minute each! Me and OH went for a very long walk around the hospital and then came back to the ward and bounced some more! The pains were very consistent and were not going away so I was very excited that things were getting moving.
By about 4pm they were getting very very painful and I asked the midwife if they could check me. They said no because I cant be checked until the 24hrs were up...this made me upset because I had been contracting for about 10 hours or so now and in a lot of pain and had no idea if the pains were actually doing anything! I was an emotional mess because I was missing my little boy at home too. A new midwife came on shift (called Lesley) and she agreed to check me. I was devestated when she told me that I was only 2cm and so not in labour! The monitor was showing my contractions coming thick and fast but they were not doing much at all
She explained that in order to go and have my waters broken I would need to be 4cm and so told me to move about as much as possible before 7.30pm to try and get to a 4. She was really lovely, she really really wanted me to get to a 4, god bless her!
At 7.30pm she came back and checked me, she said I was a 3
and so still not in labour but explained about the Bishops Score for your cervix and how she could give me a decent score to enable me to go have my waters broke! She took out the propess pessary and said it is just a case of waiting for someone to come and move me to labour ward now! I was so so so happy and got my bags packed and waited. And waited. And waited.
It got to about 10.30pm and I asked a midwife if anyone was coming for me and she said labour ward was full, all the midwifes were busy and I definitely would not be moved that night and that I should go to bed as it would be the next day by the time Ii got moved. I was gutted. More so because since the Propess was removed my contractions had stopped
I told OH to go home and get a good nights sleep so that I could go to bed too (but to be honest, I just wanted him to go so I could have a good cry on my own
). All of my pains had stopped, I wasn't getting my waters broken, and my OH was going home...I cried and cried because I felt so sorry for myself!
I tried to sleep but didn't get very far. At 4am, a midwife popped her head around the curtain and told me to get my stuff; we were going to labour ward
I was so happy! We walked over there, and I got hooked up to the monitor...I called OH and told him to come down! They montitored me for an hour or so before the consultant came in and broke my waters. At first it was just a trickle but it quickly turned into uncontrollable gushing that went on to last several hours! I was very surprised at how much there was.
By 8ish, there was still nothing happening and the midwifes had done a shift swap. I was checked and was 3cm still! No regularity to any contractions I was having...pretty uneventful really. They put me on the drip (syntocinin).
Just before 2pm, the midwife said there would soon be a shift swap, she checked me again and I was still 3cm. I broke down...I had been on the drip for hours and it was now at 20ml which was the highest the midwife could allow it to go. I was not co tracting regularly and when I did have a contraction I couldnt feel it so I knew I wasnt making any real progress anyway. I asked to speak to the consultant and practically begged for a c-section as I was so fed up! I was well into day 3 of induction and had made practically no progress and the drip was not working either.
The consultant permitted the drip to be gradually cranked up to 32ml before he would resort to a section. My new midwife came in and it was Lesley from the night before who tweaked my bishops score
She was really encouraging and made me feel much better about the situation and reassured me that things would start moving soon!
Low and behold, by about 2.30pm I started to get a few pains that were taking my breath. As I watched the monitor they were coming every 2 minutes and lasting over a minute and just knew that this was really 'it' this time. Although they were very painful, I just breathed through them. The student midwife could see I was starting to struggle with the breathing and offered me the gas and air at about 3.15pm. It didnt do much to help the pain but was a very good distraction!
Pains were coming thick and fast and getting more and more painful! Aout an hour later I could feel that baby was really starting to move down and I was trying my best not to bare down with each contraction. Lesley asked if the student could check me which I agreed to and she was like 'omg, the head is right there' so I cried with relief because I had visions of them telling me I was still 3cm! Lesley checked me just to double check and she said I was 8cm so not quite ready to push yet. Two contractions later I through the gas and air away and started to push...Lesley panicked and told me to stop because I was only an 8 but I knew my body was ready. She did a really quick check and told me I had got to 10cm and to keep pushing when I needed to!![Happy Dance :happydance: :happydance:](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/happydance2.gif)
The pain was so intense. The only thing that helped was screaming. Literally, shouting and screaming was the only way to take the pain away, it was amazing. Every push was a massive relief and I could feel his head coming down and crowning. When the contraction stopped it felt like I was sucking his head back in so I tried to keep the pressure going by baring down slightly between the contractions. The next contraction came and I pushed harder than I ever had...his head was crowning and I could feel the ring of fire (which was not bad at all!!!) and then his head just popped out. I cried with relief and asked OH what colour hair he had![haha :haha: :haha:](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/haha.gif)
The next contraction came and I pushed baby Jacks body into the world! He was placed straight onto my chest and it was the most amazing thing in the world! Jack was born at 4.39pm and wighed 8lb exactly! After 3 days of induction, it took just over two hours once I was actually in labour! Me and OH are over the moon with him, he is just adorable and looks like his big brother!
I had a big haemorrage a few minutes after delivering the placenta and the room was filled with midwifes and doctors trying to stem the bleed! It was quite scary but it was all under control. I also had a second degree tear which was stitched up and feels absolutely perfect now, can barely tell it is there!
Jack is a little star, barely cries, feeds well and is just beautiful!
