Im soooo annoyed right now, im hoping that moaning to someone & getting it out of me will make me feel better!!

So basically...OH is an agency chef & at the moment he is working at a hotel, leaves here at 4:15.....to get there for 5

well this morning, his car wouldnt start....not a big deal, sometimes when its too cold it wont, so he took my car ---not a problem ---OR SO WE THOUGHT!! :cry:

Police pull him over because the car is registered to me & they see a male driving it, so ask him routine questions.....turns out, he isnt insured to drive my car!!!!!!!!!!! Grrrrrrr!!! :growlmad: we thought that his fully comp car insurance covered him on my car 3rd party...but obv not!!!

So now...police have had my poor little car (im very protective of my car lol!!) towed to the car pound....left OH on the side of the road, so he's had to get a taxi to work....

basically im annoyed because its so bloody annoying, inconvenient, frustrating, a waste of money and oh...annoying!!

OH will prob get a fine/points on licence...he's had to pay for taxi to get to work, will have to pay taxi to get home later, then (hopefully his car wil then start later) to go and pick my car up which is usually £100+ to get it!!

Gonna end up taking over half OH's wages for the week!!!

All i need now is my waters to break & that would just be the icing on the cake!!!

Oh yea, & OH was pulled over in my car a little while bk cos obv he is male & its registered to me, & there was no problem....police didnt say anything about not being insured!!! :nope:

The only good thing to come out of this (& im really struggling to find anything good) is that we now no that OH is not insured on my car....

and now im never gonna get bk to sleep!!!
:growlmad::growlmad::growlmad::growlmad::growlmad::growlmad::growlmad::growlmad:

thanks for letting me rant on!!

That's insane! So if someone drives a car but isn't the owner, that's illegal there? How weird.

I drive OH's car every day, and neither of us have insurance.

ahh no thats fine...he can drive my car...but only if he has insurance (which we thought he was insured) Bloody UK rules!!!

Normally comprehensive insurance means he would be insured 3rd party in emergencies only. Maybe as a long shot you could argue it was an emergency? :shrug: I do think their treatment was a bit harsh for an honest mistake when you think of the hundreds of people driving around totally uninsured!

You could probably add your OH to your insurance policy (and vice versa) then you would both be fully comp to drive both cars. It might not even cost you anything, in fact it often LOWERS a premium when you add a partner! :thumbup: Lowered my premium even though my hubby has points on his license which just doesn't make sense! :dohh:
If you are unlucky enough to get points on your license, make sure you declare it to your insurance company or they could refuse to pay a claim due to non disclosure.

Ps. In case you're wondering, I work in insurance! :haha:

Obviously the police have nothing better to do...there are people committing crimes out there and they are too busy pulling over innocent people just trying to get to work. I would be fuming too, last thing you need right now.

Once you get the car back add him as a second driver on your car, and get him to add you as a second driver on his car, just incase either of you have to drive the others car in the future, sometimes it actually brings the cost down, I added my hubby as a second driver and my policy amount was reduced, cos he's got 6 years no claims! It shouldn't put the policies up though, I thought my hubby adding me would cos I had a couple of prangs in my car in the last 5 years, but it didnt cost anything more.

Ahhh Jenna :hugs: dont know what to say... what a bad time for all this to happen :(

x

Have you checked the policy? It usually says you can drive someone elses car 3rd party with the owners permission - that's what it has always said on my comprehensive cover.

If the police have made a mistake you might be able to claim back the expenses - I would kick up a big stink about it anyway.

But the best thing to do is what a couple of people have already suggested and add each other as named drivers on each other's policies, that way you are definitely covered.

I'd agree with Bigbetty, check what your hubbys policy actually says. He may well be able to claim his expences back.

The police will only have checked the policy that you have for the car not the one that he has for his car. At that time in the morning the traffics are probably bored and looking to hit their targets for the shift. Yes they do have targets of how many people they are suppost to do in a shift.

Either way you might find that it doesn't cost you anything to add him to your policy. I have my hubby and dad both on mine just for the convience that they might occassionally drive my car. Dad will be taking mine to the garage next week and I think that will be the first time he's driven it in 4 years.

For the readers out with the UK, it is illegal to drive a car in the UK without a minium of 3rd party insurance to cover any damage to other peoples property or injuries that you may cause.

totally agree:growlmad: what a pain in the a$$! :hugs::hugs:

Ok. It's not the person that needs to be insured but the car as well. The car needs an insurance policy on it for someone else to drive it. There is a massive problem with uninsured drivers whether doing it knowingly or not and is what is driving up insurance premiums. How would you feel if an uninsured driver hit you or your car??

The police have jobs to do and cutting down on uninsured drivers is one of them... If there was an grade one emergency cracking off at the time, believe me they would leave in a nano second, but there wasn't. It looks like your OH was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was picked up by ANPR in the car or a car-check over the radio...

There are no targets for "doing people"!!!!

I know this is really bad timing and it would piss me off too, as well as it being a genuine mistake but ignorance is no excuse and the law is the law I'm affraid and as you said, it's a mistake you will unlikely make in the future....

hi...yea i understand what u mean... but the car is insured.....in my name, OH has his own insurance for his car & i have my own insurance for my car.....just thought that cos he was fully comp on his, would mean 3rd party on mine, but obv not!!

Thats life.....:growlmad::growlmad:

Then there is a mistake somewhere... either from the insurance companies not updating police records (which rarely happen but can) or the policy holders not reading their policies properly. Another thing to happen is that policies can expire, or monthly payments not going through which can cause them to expire.

I would get on the phone to your policy provider now and speak to them and get your OH to do the same with his. Take both your insurance certificates with you when you go to pick up the car and if it is found to be a genuine mistake, the police will make it right for you!! The police wouldn't have taken your car under false pretences, something has gone wrong somewhere....

hope you get it sorted! xx
