Hi really could do with some advice I feel physically sick over it!

My partner recieved a letter today sayin he owes £2992 in tax, I can't stop worrying! His employer has been taking tax out of his wages each month (he works for a small building company).

As far as we were both aware his employed has been paying the tax as the money has been taken out of his wages each month.

But I closer inspection they've got his income wrong, they've got his income down as £34,162 for 2011-2012 when infact all he earnt was £11,400

Does this mean I can stop worrying I've been crying all morning.

I'd even go as far as saying I think he's been paying to much tax on the wages for last year.

Thankyou in advance x

It's worth a phone call, they often make mistakes especially if he has changed jobs in the last year or two!

First I would call his employer and get the exact numbers.
Then call the tax people.

I'd definately call them, does sound like it may be a mistake in the income.

All though my husband apparently owed £1000 the other year which we had to pay hmrc cock up all the time, I do know a lot of people who've had refunds though.

If he only earned around £11,000 then he should have only paid around £85 per month in tax (or £1000 for the whole year)

HMRC make mistakes ALL the time. Get him to give them a call, if he has been paying tax on his wages then he'll probably be owe them nothing. Even if he is, it would appear to be his employer's mistake so I would be asking them to pay it and reduce his salary by an agreed amount until it is paid off.

More than £85 a month has been coming out each month, does that mean hes owed money? Xx

Thankyou for all your advice his employer is going to sort it for him, apparently it's to with a mistake his boss made when finalising his paternity leave last year

Could he be owed a tax Rebait?

Thankyou xxxx

Although his employer has said he will deal with it your partner still needs to contact HMRC to sort it out and will need his p60.

He may well be due a rebate his p60 will show the tax he has paid.

My other half thought it was down to his employer as he's the one who made the mistake.

Should my other half just phone to confirm its been dealt with and give figures from p60 x

my hubby has a hmrc letter sat on the side here it came through the post this morning.........i really feel i should open it now incase he supposedly owes anything he iwll go mad! x

to original poster -- make sure your OH also calls the tax office, just for your own sanity! (and to make sure that everything is correct!)

best wishes

Id definitely make sure your OH phones hmrx hun as it it his tax he needs to keep on top of it doesnt matter if his work.say they will sort it it is down to your OH to make sure hun. x

definately call HMRC! When OH changed jobs in 2010 they took 2/3 his pay in tax...........as HMRC told his new employer he owed them the money...........I got ALL his payslips from the last 3 years, went through them with LISTENTOTAXMAN and found them wrong, called them and they looked into it and sure enough........HMRC has cocked up! So they refunded the money - well his work did and then HMRC refunded them,
