Did anybody start taking baby aspirin without their doctor advising them?
We are back on the TTC wagon after having two M/C back to back. My doctor said it's not worth investigating unless it happens a third time. Do I really want to go through that a third time though? What are the dangers of starting a baby aspirin regimen on my own volition?

Also, if you take BA (with or without your doctors recommendation), are you taking them to avoid multiple M/Cs? What "types" of M/Cs did you have?

Hey Jillie

I have no idea.. lol but glad you asked this question since I was wondering the exact same thing.. Hoping that you get some good replies :)

I was looking into this but I believe the baby aspirin helps with blood clotting issues that contributes to losses? I had a blighted ovum which doc said is basically just really bad luck...I did increase my folic acid more then just my prenatal to ensure that I have more folic acid in me in case we end up pregnant before AF.

Best of luck on whatever decision you make!

I'm planning on doing this too. My fertility consultant said that if I try FET again he'll give me clexane and low dose aspirin in case it's clotting issues but I'm trying at home first and I'm going to take the aspirin. He hasn't diagnosed clotting issues but he says it can be taken 'just in case'. He's of the opinion that it only works with clexane alongside but I've read that aspirin on it's own can help.

The only thing I'd recommend is looking up what medical issues they say you can't have while taking baby aspirin and checking you don't have any of those. I feel safe taking it because a doctor who has access to my previous blood tests has said he'd give it to me but you don't have that luxury.

If anyone else reads this who has already done it, I'd like to know when you start taking it - at ovulation? Before ovulation? After the BFP?

I also saw a study that said increased folic acid & baby aspirin can lead to twinning. Not sure where I saw it, believe it was a UK study though!

Hi there,

After a mc at 10 weeks in may I started on my own a baby asprin a day, after reading about how it helped some. I got my BFP in August and continued one a day until 11 weeks or so. Then did one ever other day for another two weeks I so. I still find that taking one when I a campy helps ease them down, but that could just be in my head...so far I am 19 weeks. Both scans baby is great and at 16 weeks hb was 155bpm.

Hope this helps. Good luck, and lots of baby dust your way.

Edit to answer burrr
I started after I stopped bleeding from fist mc. As I didn't track ovulation.

Hey congrats, that's really encouraging <3 If I hadn't M/C in late Sept, Id be right there with you, at 16 weeks :(

Sorry to hear that sweety. Good thoughts your way.

When I was TTC #1 I had 3 miscarriages back to back...all around 8 weeks. I saw a RE that did some testing and recommended that I take 4 mg folic acid everyday. I added the baby aspirin on my own. I didn't take the BA during AF because I didn't want it to affect my flow. Anyway I continued the BA from O until about 14 weeks. Not sure why I stopped at 14 weeks....baby turned out perfectly fine though.

Hi JillieBean - I've had two mmcs. My doc has recommended BA and Progesterone after next BFP - this is without any testing suggesting clotting issues or low progesterone. I'm feeling a bit mixed about it - I don't think I have low progesterone (normal L.P. length, and my temps didn't dip during either pregnancy), and I've read some mixed info on BA - that it could be linked to increasing chance of mc if you don't hvae clotting issues, coz of the blood thinning effect. I've come across many more positive than negative stories, though.

My plan is to chance it with the BA - I feel like I have to do something different next time - but maybe wait for a blood test to see whether progesterone is necessary - ?? I dunno, there are so many different forms of advice out there!

I'm in Ireland, and I can't get BA over the counter here, but think I might be able to in the North -
anyone know if you can get BA over the counter in the UK?

After my MC in August my dr recommended one BA a day when we wanted TTC again. She swears it has helped with alot of people with recurrent MC's. I have only had the one but she wants me to still do it. So sorry for all your losses. it is so hurtful to go thru. :hugs:

Boodley, I'm in England and we can get it in Asda just off the shelves, not even having to go to the pharmacy bit. So hopefully NI will be similar.

Thanks Burrr! I'd imagine it's the same in the North so. I'll have to go for a little drive some day soon!

Jilli,

My best friend and I were pregnant at the same time. This is her 3rd preg. post 2 miscarriages and her Dr. put her on BA and progesterone even though all her levels were normal. He said the same " just in case". She is now in her 2nd trimester 14.5 weeks.
I had my first miscarriage in October. I asked my doctor about BA and progesterone. He said not to try it unless I had 2 miscarriages.
I've also researched a lot about BA, does seem to help women with multiple MC.
If you would really like to try it and your doctor advises against it you could always try a second opinion from another doctor. Based on my doctor and my friends doctors actions I think this next time is the time to try it, but it do advise your doctor being on board with it.

I hope this helps. Sorry for your losses :(

I so appreciate all of this input. I have been taking it for a while now, and I have an appt with my doctor on Friday where I'll discuss it further with her. Thank you everybody!

After my 3rd mc, and alot of internet research, I started self-dosing on baby aspirin as soon as i got my BFP. I learned that tho it won't saved an already failed pregnancy due to genetic issues, it WILL help prevent a miscarriage of a normal pregnancy. After my 3rd mc, I sent the tissue away for genetic testing, and it came back normal. The doctors told me after the first mc.. bad luck... they told me after my 2nd mc it was just really bad luck but seriously the 3rd couldnt have just been more bad luck, esp with normal tissue.
So I've been on 81mg a day of aspirin, plus my prenatal and an extra folic acid supplement and alpha-lipoic acid, which is an antioxidant supplement I took anyways pre-pregnancy that helps cells uptake glucose (i.e helps prevent diabetes) and it helps with cellular renewal. So far, this pregnancy is the furthest I have EVER gestated... and my symptoms have been strong, and we detected a HB at 6.5weeks.. which I have never had a HB detected before either.
I swear its all due to the aspirin.. because not only does a lose dose help with clotting issues, but its also an anti-inflammatory, and pregnancy puts your body into a state of inflammation, which is not good.
I intend on taking the baby aspirin up until labor, because I have heard some bad stories of term babies dying in utero due to blood clots in the cord... and if you search the forums on 'baby aspirin' youll find many stories of women that took BA right up until the end with no problems

hope this helps, and best of luck to you!!!
