Today, I went to clinic and after some horrendous nights with James the mother of all bad nights happened last night he was up every hour wanting to feed, HV says he is trying to increase my supply. She aslo wants me to start properly on rice, she says she would much prefer this than me giving formula. So we started again today. He loves it. Any one else done this?

I think really he's just going through a growth spurt and just needs to feed more often, I personally wouldn't do the cereal. 3-4mo is a huge growth spurt

I started Poppy quite early on rice but that was due to her suffering with reflux. I thought the earliest recommended time HV recommend weaning was 4 months but I suppose all babies are different. I think it's great that you have a HV who is not encouraging you to give James formula though. Makes a real change from what others on here have said.

she said the reccommended earliest is 16 weeks to start and he will be 16 weeks on Sunday, so she said just stick to rice.

I started at 17 weeks due to reflux and he was just really really hungry. He was very miserable for 3 weeks before I tried the rice. It was quite watery and not a lot different to milk but it did make a huge difference, and he really likes eating too. Hope it works out for you, if thats what you want to do.

Great he's loving the rice :) My HV encouraged me to wean to a bottle in a round about way! Every HV has different advice on these things. :dohh: I havent tried Oliver on baby rice yet, I wasnt sure when to, I have noticed that he is starting to get very interested in my food and very fussy with feeding.

Every baby is different, he may be going through a growth spurt, and he may just need the extra substance. If your comfortable with it and he is happy there is no reason to stop.

It sounds like he is going through a growth spurt and needing to increase your supply. Once they have finished the growth spurt and the milk is increased things should settle down.
You really should think twice before giving anything other than milk before 6 months, your supply may suffer and it is not good for their digestive system. As this stage milk is best still.

I hope things settle down for you, it really can be stressful when you don't get the sleep and you are worrying about Little one.

Jacob has just come through the dreaded 4 month growth spurt - an absolute bloody nightmare - same as you, up every hour and driving me to tears. I am so so pleased to say though that the last two nights he has gone done at 6.30pm, woken at 2/2.30 for a feed and then back down again till 6.30, im chuffed to bits. It can and will get better without having to feed him baby rice before he is ready.

Definitely sounds like a growth spurt. I'm really surprised that your HV would advise to wean so early, they aren't meant to encourage it before 6 months, though I think many are supportive of parents who choose to wean between 4 and 6 months.

Jack's 4 month growth spurt lasted about 10 days, about 3 times longer than any previous one and now he is going longer between feeds than he did before the growth spurt, which is something I have heard a number of mums report. However, parents who mistake the 4 month growth spurt for a need for food never get through it to know any different. It's such a shame as there really isn't much chance of going back once you start solids and before 6 months it isn't good for them.

I hope you get through it soon.

I asked her if it it could affect his health, cause alergies etc in anyway and she said no, he'll be fine as long as I just stick to Baby rice, He seems to be really enjoy it so I am just going to carry on giving him just that once a day.

I would wait, and see if it's a growth spurt and then go from there. The 4 month one is the worst one by far!

This information is inaccurate.

My first was a very difficult baby .. god she screamed all the time, after several doc visits and checkups the HV decided she was just a very hungry baby and at 3 months she told me to start her on a little baby rice.

Just a few spoonfuls at first make up with my own milk,

It did help i must admit but my DD is now 6 and allergic to cats, dogs, horses (most anmials in fact) alot of skin creams and she has eczema.

It my have nothing to do with the early weening but my other LO's who i didnt start weening until at least 6 months have no allergies or skin probs at all as far as i know so i do always wonder.

Thats interesting thanks. She sound like me!! Im alergic to all those things too. How long did you stick to just rice before moving on to purees?

Hi hun, i think she was about 5 month when i started adding other flavors but i didn't giver her purees straight away, id add a spoonful of puree to her baby rice and mix it (again on the advice of the HV) its hard to know whats right isn't it :(
