Just curious.... Did you use LOs adjusted age or actual age when startin solids?? I have heard opinions from doctors on both sides. My little guy is almost 6 months, 3 adjusted, and had shown an increased interest in food, spoons, being spoons to his mouth, chewing in his hands, slobbering, etc. I'm wondering whether he may be ready to start trying something. Thoughts?? TIA!!!

I've heard that preemies should start solids based on their adjusted age, especially if they were born really preemie. I've read this in books and it's also what my doctor suggests! My LO is 7.5 months old, 4.5 months adjusted but I won't be starting solids until he's at least 6 months adjusted. :)

We started at 6 months actual. Just a tablespoon a day and slowly increased it.

It is 5-7 actual age. This leaflet, from the Bliss website, has great advice.

This was also backed by the neonatal consultants here when we were in your shoes.

My little guy was 6 months actual but literally tiny amounts, I no they say there digestive system have been working longer but remember there still so tiny. My little guy is 11months actual now and 8 months corrected and I go by his corrected age wen it comes to amount of food etc, believe me wen he started food he loved it but if he had even a tea spoon more he was in agony for days with it. It's only been the last month where he's his happy contented baby again we had 4 months of crying all night and so wingy etc, now we limit his food cos he would eat all day long lol. He was born weighing 2lb 4oz and got him weighed this week and is now a whopping 17lb 4oz :) believe me take it very slow it never looks a lot but it's enough

It's actual age, it's to do with their iron and vitamin stores starting to deplete

It's whenever they are ready. Give it a try and see how he does. The doctors pushed us to start our little gal at 6 months adjusted (almost 10 months actual age) and she was seriously not ready. She choked and gagged on everything. She didn't successful transition to solids until she was 13 months adjusted (9 months adjusted).

I asked on here and looked at the Bliss website and was advised actual. The reason I asked was she was 6 months actual (3.5 adjusted) and she was mimicking us eating and watching our every eating move. First I just rubbed a little fruit on her lips when I had some for her to taste it then we tried a few wee spoons of puréed fruit and veg and she handled it very well. We've now moved to stage 2 with teeny soft chunks and she's loving it.

Good luck :flower:

Thanks all! We asked our ped too and he said to go for it so we did and he's done awesome! So far he's he'd avocado, rice cereal, and squash. So much fun!

That's interesting there are so many different opinions on the topic. I've read plenty of books written by doctors that are hard pressed that it's adjusted age, and my ped agrees.

At the end of the day, I would go by baby's cues and really figuring out when he's ready.
