i've just read the start of Kat's thread about the lady who was defending her decision to FF and it got me thinking, everyone i talk to assumes i'm FFing.

people's first question is to ask how many oz katie's on, or what formula i'm using - is it that unusual for someone to BF? maybe its cos i'm young?

someone even told me i was brave for BFing!!

has anyone else experienced this?

Yes I get it all the time. Even more so now she is past 6 months. Now the most common is "you're STILL breastfeeding?" Yes, I am still feeding my child, f*ck off.

Sorry. Got abit carried away there. I think BFing is less common now. Especially for young people.

I live in a hippie town, and a very hippie area of Austin as well, so BFing is very common. I noticed on day in my postnatal yoga class that at one time there were 10 out of 19 of us nursing. haha

I told a few women I plan to BF for a year and they told me I was crazy...

The people in my immediate environment aren't supprised and haven't commented about me BF and also most (if not all) of the 15 women in my mothers group are Bfing, so I'm pleased with that.

But before I had Jasper I was working in childcare and and of the 26 babies I'd see in a week, only 2 were breastfed. The demographic of the mothers of our center are all highly successful working mothers, so FF was simply more conviniant and I suspect, because they're also highly organised motivated people I'm assuming that the ability to schedual feed would be appealing.

I was told by a couple of friends that BFing was more painful than childbirth, which I'm sure is an exageration and as they both stuck at it and BF until 1 year, so it cant have been THAT bad. In a way, that advice was good, because I was prepared to suffer with BFing so when it was easy and virtually painless from day 1, it was such a wonderful relief.

Well I defintly notice that where I live not as many people breastfeed, but I knew way before I was pregnant that I was going to breastfeed. I never considered it weird though, and I never knew people did. I didn't know people automatically assumed youre formula feeding either. The world is strange.

I live in what's classed as a "deprived" area:blush:. Formula feeding is definitely the most common form of feeding which is a shame as breastmilk is free and you don't have to buy bottles, sterilisers etc unless expressing so works out cheaper but....most people get milk tokens/free milk etc so they bottlefeed instead.

I was at a toddler group once with my eldest daughter and needed to feed my other daughter....wow...I ended up with an audience and someone said the most bizarre comment I've ever heared

......"wow, that's a good idea isn't it? I'd not thought of that"

:dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh:

Oh this gave me a good giggle, thank you!

Yes, we get funny comments. The other day DH told a colleague (a young man with a kid, bit of a knacker) about Byron's colic and how sometimes he sounds like a goose in his sleep when he's got painful wind to be passed, to which he got the response "are you mad? Why don't you change the feed?" DH of course pointed out I only make one variety. Working in a library with loads of women DH always gets odd comments depending on whether they bottle or breast fed. They always seem to think any complaint is associated with the kind of feeding they didn't do.

 at Hevz, that's quite terrifying!

My area has a drop out rate of BFing of over 80% in the first week.

The thing I've found is that midwives and other health professionals are shocked at how much I want to BF, and the effort I'm putting into it. They are so supportive, but every one of them has mad comments about how everyone else would have given up by now.

People always seem to be surprised when I say that I plan on breastfeeding too. Again, I don't know if it's because I'm young or because breastfeeding isn't that common around here any more? x

People always seem surprised when I say I'm planning to BF and ask why I'm not FF

I went to Starbucks the other day while out shopping and it was full of mothers and baba's i was the only one who was BF all the other mums had bottles with them, must of been around 8 mums with babies.

Every person i speak to has said they can't believe i haven't given up by now (i've had a lot of latch problems with very sore nipples) they all also said why don't you just give him Formula!!! even my mam, So much for support eh!!!!

glad i'm not the only one! well, i'm not, i cant believe people arent more for BFing.

LMAO hevz, i cant beliebe someone actually said that! the girl in the bed next to me in hosp was getting asked by the MWs about BFing, she said no, its easier to FF. i think she was from wythenshawe or somewhere like that lol!

Newall Green actually:blush:

I think breastfeeding is easier unless you want to go out. I know breastfeeding in theory should be easier when you're out and about but unfortunately in the UK it's still alright for someone to ask a breastfeeding mother to move. I hope things change soon.

That's not true any more. It's against the law in Scotland and I'm pretty sure the law in England and Wales changed recently
