Hi, so I was borderline GD in pregnancy with DS but didnt do the test this time as had the home testing kit and have been told to call if my levels go up. If anything I have a problem with low levels and having to eat often to stop them dropping.

So Im just over 36 weeks and they found sugar in my urine last friday and said to monitor levels as I hadnt done them for a while, so I have been checking and today I had a few roast potatoes, chicken breast and bacon in gravy, brocolli and peas with leeks in cheese sauce and carrots. An hour later my level was 8.
The other day my level was 8.3 but I cant remember what it was after having now ........

Anyway, all my other readings have been fine, 4.4 this am, then 6.8 an hour after eating special K - I think it may have been special K that sent my levels high before, 8.3. Now heres whats odd - yesterday after eating roast beef, mash potato and brocolli and carrots my levels were 5.8 - so why today does it jump high?

At what point do they put you on insulin? Am ok if readings after meals are around 8? Im going to let the midwife know when I see her Monday but wasnt sure if it was an urgent thing that I should see the dr earlier?

Hi,

I have GD and am at 31 weeks. It seems that many hospitals differ on the exact levels and times they recommend but this is what I have been told (Live in Yorkshire) so I hope it is of some help. I have to take fasting blood test in morning and level should be under 6. Then I have to test one hour after each meal and they said level should be under 7.8.

I experienced same problem with something being ok one day and not the next as for first week had bran flakes for breakfast and levels were fine, then they went high one day and the next so tried special K (this was recommended on one of the leaflets that hospital gave me) and it was higher still! I don't know if it is due to hormonal demands changing or what (or it could be because of the cheese if that was the one difference in what you ate I dunno) but have had similar experiences where what I thought was a 'safe food' has caused a spike after it has been fine before, it just seems to be trial and error which is very frustrating (

I would give your midwife a call and see what she says, have you been keeping a note of your readings and times? This is supposed to help identify times of day when your body might be finding it harder to control (mine seems to be after breakfast now and am really restricted on what I can have without it going above 7.8, although I have had a few spikes at other meal times - again very confusing and frustrating!).

GD is such a pain as some days I just don't know what to eat, but you are further on than me so at least its not long for you :)

Hope this is of some help.

Thats to do with what youre eating. A couple of roast potatoes on their own shouldnt be too bad, but you have the flour in the sauce and gravy which will make your blood sugar higher, plus the cheese and milk from the sauce. Just with it all combined its probably been a bit too much for you.

You shouldnt have readings above 7.8 with GD, but to me it sounds like you can manage that with just altering your diet a little bit. Have you been given some diet advise?

potatoes and flour have carbohydrates which break down in to sugar thus causing your levels to rise, they are just slower realase than say a mars bar etc.

I highly doubt they would put you on insulin at this late stage in the pregnancy as insulin takes some time to adjust to and get your levels right and it is a stress on you to start it. They may decide that you need to cut back further on carbohydrates though to try to bring it down slightly and when you give birth if you have been having levels around 8 then they will have to watch baby for signs of low sugars after birth.

Nonetheless I am not your doctor so you need to speak to them - they should be monitoring your babies growth now and also the placenta to see if you need to be induced early or not. If I were you I'd go for a check up and take your levels with you so they can see what is going on - maybe test a LOT (6-8 times a day) for a few days before seeing them.
