Hey ladies!

I am now 26 weeks pregnant and have had a few episodes of being around loud noises and am now beginning to question them. About a month ago my husband was taking up the tile in our living room with a loud machine, and the whole time I stayed in our bedroom with the door closed, so the noise was muffled a bit, but still loud for a good part of the day. In addition to that, we had our house alarm installed last week and while I was standing right next to the alarm it went off, which was VERY loud. My dogs were whining at it because it was so loud. I tried to get away from it fast but it went on for a few minutes. Then, last night, I stood pretty much right beside an extremely loud Harley Davidson that revved up a few times. I went away as fast as I could, though.

Do you think this could have impaired baby's hearing? Just looking for similar experiences on this subject. I know she is well protected in there, but still concerned since her ears are just developing and because of how sensitive they are.

Thank you SO much for your help/advice!

Im not sure tbh but I wouldnt think it would do any damage. They are very very well protected in there and extremely muffled x

We frequently went shooting when I was pregnat with DD, and she hears just fine.

Thank you for replying and letting me know! I know that guns can be very loud so this is helpful. Thank you again :)

I'm glad you posted this because I'm having the same concern. I work in a laboratory and dispense liquid nitrogen on a daily basis. We're required to wear hearing protection. There's one lab in particular I dispense liquid nitrogen in 4 days per week that's particularly loud and the opening of the hose where the sound is omitted from is right at tummy level. Ive been pregnant before and the thought never even crossed my mind that it could harm baby, but I've been having to dispense LN2 in this particular lab more often this time around and the last time I was up there dispensing the baby began moving around a lot and she usually doesn't move around much during the day when I'm up and about and I began to get paranoid that she was distressed by the noise. I've since looked it up and apparently there are some studies that suggest repeated or prolonged exposure to loud noises (over 100 decibels) or short term occasional exposure of extremely loud noises (around 150 decibels) can increase the risk of baby hearing damage in utero, preterm labor and low birth weight. I've been in contact with safety to try to obtain the exact decibel readings from the last test we had so I can ask my dr if this is okay, but if they cant find them they will have to do another test and I don't want my colleagues to think I'm putting up a big stink over nothing.

Remember they are surrounded by fluid. Imagine your hearing when you are under water swimming. Its quite muffled...that is how baby hears. The worse it will do is startle the baby a bit but wont harm them. And at 26 weeks their hearing is still improving. The only time you have to worry about hearing damage is once baby is born.

They are surrounded be fluid and deep inside, they probably hear like we do under water, I reckon your baby will be fine! Bet the sounds woke her up though!

I went to fireworks for July 4th last year when I was about 32 weeks pregnant with my son. He did seem to get pretty stressed out by it (moving all over the place and going crazy) so I ended up putting two folded blankets over my belly and that seemed to help calm him. I wouldn't worry about things happening occasionally, but repeated exposure everyday might be something to talk to your doctor about.

I would doubt very much that loud noises in the outside world could harm a baby's ears in utero. they're floating in fluid and then surrounded with layers of muscle, fat and skin. So pretty well insulated!

I asked my doctor about going to really loud concerts (just worked at one this weekend at 22w) and she said that shouldn't be a problem at all.

Thanks ladies!! Still can't help but to be paranoid sometimes when going to loud movie theaters, etc., but that's just my paranoia kicking in. I know (and really hope) she hears just fine!

My sister and I went to Kylie concerts when she was pregnant with both of her children (1st 6months 2nd about 3months pregnant) both have perfect hearing now and they're nearly 10 and 6 years old now!
