this was a tip from my hv when my son was a baby and had colic. She said to swirl his bottles rather than shake them to mix formula. Shaking puts lots of tiny bubbles into the milk which may then cause wind/gas pains in the lower intestines.

I'm always seeing people saying about shaking bottles and even the formula instructions say to shake. :dohh:

Anyone else heard of this?

It does work, as my sons wind pains improved so much, then a friend made up bottles for me when at her house and I forgot to say swirl them, his wind was really bad after that feed.

I still swirl now with Mirrens bottles.:winkwink:

Yep, i stir not shake, started doing it when Brady was having problems with wind. Wouldnt shake them at all now

I have to do this with ds milk as you cannot shake it (he is on nutramigen aa due to severe milk allergy) i tend to get the bottle between my hands and roll it in between them it does help as he doesn't tend to have as much wind as my girls did.

Yeah, we stir the bottles too. We did shake them at first but saw in the Dr brown instructions that we should stir and it immediately helped his wind. The MW at the hospital told us to shake the bottles & it says on the instructions too!

Great advice! We'll start swirling and not shaking in future.

I use Dr Brown bottles, and we swirl our bottles :) Doesn't seem to cause any hassle with it not mixing or anything :)

Thats so weird you should say that!! cause thats what i've always done! no one told me its a good thing though :) ! I just sorta did it of my own accord  x

We swirl and shake... we started swirling cos we noticed that if we shook the bottle straight after adding the powder, some of it would get caught up in the teat and be a real bugger to mix up.
After reading this thread I think we'll cut out the shaking tho as Evie's starting to show signs of reflux so hopefully this might help! Thanks ladies

I swirled at first but now she has infant gaviscon in her feed, which I find doesnt dissolve that brilliantly, I have to give it a little shake just to check to make sure any lumps have gone.

But I agree, swirling is better, wish they said it on the tubs!!

I started swirling after the nipple at the end of the tube inside my TT CTN bottle came off and flipin milk went all over me and lo. Swirling ensures the inner nipple doesn't get shaken off. Lo does seem slightly better but she's still full of wind poor little sausage.

i have to shake, theres no way gaviscon will dissolve proper otherwise!
