Hi Girls,
I'm currently combination feeding my LO but i'm looking to just ff soon. Trouble is she makes such a fuss when it comes to drinking her formula, but she loves her ebm. Am I right in thinking breastmilk has a sweet taste and formula doesnt? It breaks my heart to see her pulling faces and absolutely hating her ff. As if I didnt feel bad enough, last night halfway through her feed she vomited the whole lot up, pouring from her mouth and nose, it was so distressing for both of us.
Do you think she vomited cos it doesnt agree with her, or she doesnt like it?
Would changing brand help, would it taste any different? We're using Hipp atm. Just to confuse us though she quite likes the ready mixed cartons you can buy, just hates the powdered variety!
Any advice much appreciated!
Thanks x :flower:

It's said that Aptamil is closest to BM. U can give it a try & see how it goes. I didnt BF but we had to change formula 4 times until we found one that agrees with him. I think BM is easier to digest than formula this is why she's bringing up the formula.

Good luck hun.

I had the same problem with Abi so the HV recommended we did half FF and half EBM in every feed then they never know any difference. Then when you decide to give up the BM you can do it gradually making it easier on your boobs a bit.

Yeah, I'd recommend half and half for a bit until you gradually go to just formula. I was always very lucky with LO as when I was mixed feeding he showed no preference at all for either (I mixed fed with Aptamil) so he never reacted when I switched to just formula.
My son's been just on Aptamil for a while now but sometimes will throw up a whole feed so I wouldn't worry too much. Formula is thicker and a bit harder to digest than BM, also sometimes they can take too much from a bottle as it's less work for them which can cause them to possett. Also, you will smell of BM so it might be worth having someone else give the odd bottle until your baby is used to the taste of formula (only temporarily though as I'm sure you'll want to do most of the feeding). With the cartons, again my LO will take both but they do look and taste a bit different. I would try to carry on with the powdered milk if you can a otherwise you may end up bankrupt (although cartons are good when you're out and about)!
Good luck hun and I hope that you enjoy success!

My HV told me that lots of BF babies prefer the ready-made cartons to the powdered formula as apparently they taste sweeter for some reason. Trouble is it's more expensive! I was discussing this as I go back to work in September and will be using formula then... when my LO has had formula so far she has taken Aptamil with absolutely no problem. HV did suggest mixing your EBM with the formula at first so I agree with the advice above. Good luck.

We're mixed feeding at the moment using Aptamil Hungry baby milk which seems to suit Thomas fine. I'd heard Aptamil was closest to bm. Maybe it's worth considering a change of formula if you're lo really seems to dislike your current brand.

I BF for 3 months, giving her formula at night for awhile. I then tried combo feeding and she would not have it once she started getting more bottles, so she pretty much weaned herself after that. I started out on 4oz bottles, putting 3 oz of ebm and 1 oz of formula, them increasing the formula every other night by an oz. The first time I tried straight formula she made all kinds of faces and refused it..LOL it was quite comical to watch. But after I mixed it for awhile, she had no problems with it. I also found that my LO didn't like the ready made formula. She prefered the powder for some reason.

My LO doesn't like Enfamil (which is what they gave me in the hospital to supplement) but now that I'm FF, she CAN'T STAND Enfamil and it gives her wicked gas but LOVES Nestle Good Start. If I give her the Enfamil, she'll just throw it up.
So you can always try a different brand?
Also, the ready to eat formula is much thicker, and babies tend to like it quite a bit more than the powdered, as it's like a milkshake. It's more expensive, but it's an option too?

I give Lexi a bottle of formula on most days when I don't have enough milk. She used to throw up quite a bit (Hipp milk), but then I noticed that she is doing much better with Aptamil. Unfortunately it is not organic like Hipp but at least she can keep it down.
I also use ready made cartons and the price is not really an issue for an occasional bottle, but I suppose it could get expensive if you only FF.

We had this problem with my first born.

What we did that helped was mixing breast milk & formula. For a week we'd do about 1/4 formula & the rest BM. Then the next week half BM half formula, the next 1/4 BM the rest formula. It helped her stomach adjust and she was able to adjust to the taste.

We did have to mess around wih the different brands though. She actually preferred the store brand formulas instead of the 'name brand' ones.

Breast milk IS sweeter but formulas are pretty sweet tasting too (once you develop a taste for it). We are long term formula users and if I ask her now which ones she likes, she still prefers the store brand. She's 5 and prefers the taste of formula over cows milk. No she doesn't drink it from a bottle (she wishes though). Doesn't bother me any, formula is SOOOOO much more healthy than cows milk.
