My gp has prescribed me flucloxacillin 250 four times a day for five days.
No medication at all had passed these lips during pregnancy and I have always been fearful of needing antibiotics, I don't want to hurt my baby. Gp says it's ok....anyone else had them?

I don't know if I took the exact same ones, but I've been given an antibiotic shot, taken antibiotics, and have taken tamiflu and Tylenol this pregnancy and all is fine. Oh, and LOTS of tums. I'm assuming you asked if it was OK for baby? If not, call your ob to verify it is OK.

I did ask and he said it was ok but I still don't want to take them!!!

I lost a baby due to infection (i wasn't infected, the placenta and membranes were), so for my next pregnancy I took Erythromicin 250, 4x per day. It was prescribed by my Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists. I was told the dose was low and frequent because the half life is short and little to none of it would get to the baby. I took it from 14 to 37 weeks. My baby has been fine, granted she is only 11 days old. My case was a bit different because they didn't know where the infection came from and suspected it was a bacteria I normally carry but my baby couldn't handle.

With the low dosage and frequency, plus the doctor being aware of the pregnancy it is probably safe...and safer than not taking it.

I didn't see it on any US OB med lists, but when I searched the name all the stuff came up was UK stuff so it may be not as widely used here. This is what I found:

4.6 Pregnancy and lactation
Pregnancy: Animal studies with flucloxacillin have shown no teratogenic effects. The product has been in clinical use since 1970 and the limited number of reported cases of use in human pregnancy have shown no evidence of untoward effects. The decision to administer any drug during pregnancy should be taken with the utmost care. Therefore flucloxacillin should only be used in pregnancy when the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks associated with treatment.

I would definitely double check with your Ob, and if they give the go ahead I would take the medicine, I know that antibiotics are prescribed during pregnancy because the benefits outweigh the risks, your baby needs you to be healthy in order to be healthy!

I understand your hesitation about taking medication during pregnancy, because I very much feel the same way. However, I had to take Amoxicillin (safe to use during pregnancy) for a tooth infection early on in my pregnancy. It was one of those cases where the infection poses a much higher risk to the baby then the antibiotic could have. It made me feel nervous taking it, but I did it because I didn't want that infection harming him. All is well. From what Misspriss posted it seems that your antibiotic is also safe to use during pregnancy.

Well I have just taken the first one, much to my disgust!!! I guess I probably absorb most of it before any gets to baby (I hope!) Xx

Take a good probiotic along side and afterwards to replenish your gut flora.

If you need it, you need it. Your doctor won't have given you something that would harm your baby.

I had to take antibiotics for a UTI in my first pregnancy and everything turned out fine. My LO is better than fine. :)

That is a very valid point, also helpful because of the prevalence of yeast infections during pregnancy. I ended up with a bad one after my round of antibiotics.
