My LO just turned 7 months old and still is just EBF..He has been sitting by himself for a while now and seems interested in food but gags on anything i give him unless its in popsicle form. He hates purees..but BLW doesn't seem to be working either. Is this okay? Can I keep going slow and just giving him tastes until he's ready? Or is this a problem that he still gags every time he gets a tiny bit of anything thats not liquid!?

This was mine for a while, too. They're learning how to manipulate food in their mouths. To help, we stuck with very very mushy food for a while until he got the hang of it. Like roast squashes and root vegetables. I'd offer beans, but I'd mush them just a little. I'd freeze and thaw raspberries and blueberries, lol. He got lots of the benefits of BLW (self-feeding, food of varied consistencies, everyday food combinations and spices) and he got the hang of it and started taking more and more "formed" food quickly and then started upping his solid intake. It's okay to take it very slow. Frankly, I'm not personally all that arsed about solids anyway until they get molars. Eating without all your teeth is really hard, lol.

I don't think you need to worry too much, keep the phrase "food for fun until they're 1" in mind but maybe speak to your GP/HV about whether or not, nutritionally speaking, your LO needs more. I don't know anything about BLW and I'm not brave enough to try it, but there is loads of info on it in the weaning section on here and I know there would be lots of mums who would be willing to offer advice and support. With regards to the gagging thing, apparently that's ok and a natural reaction after only having liquids. As the weaning process goes on this becomes less frequent as the gagging reflex weakens and moves further back so you should persevere despite this (but if its very difficult or the gagging is very strong then perhaps seek some medical advice). So it's important to get them used to food alongside their milk.

Try a few different puréed foods, there are loads of recipes to try and remember that LO's taste buds are very sensitive so try some simple flavours first. I used the pouches, apple or pear which LO loves and some combinations like parsnip and apple can be quite tasty too. My LO is 8 months, I weaned early at 5 months but LO still can't stand anything with broccoli in it even when it's only a tiny bit. Don't be scared to go back to things LO didn't like at first, most foods are an acquired taste for LOs.

Good luck!

Totally fine, babies are really different in how they take to food. Mine was the same way at that age (and until recently). We kept trying both purees and BL and now he loves purees and takes some finger foods too. Your LO will get there
