Why do tax credits change things!

I called to amend some details & they've given me an extra payment today & then reduced my weekly payments but it all equates to the same so why make that extra payment in first place?!

This has happened to me! I've gone back to work, they made a one off payment and then REDUCED the weekly amount BUT as of April when the new tax year starts it goes back UP by about an extra £75PW!

Doesn't seem right to me
