Terrible SA results, please help.

I really hope no-one minds me posting here. I posted this in ttc and kristy kindly suggested that you ladies might be able to offer me some advice.

DH got SA results back today and it's not good news.

Count ok - 34 mil
Motility not great - 25% good, 20% slow, 35% poor, 20% immobile
Morphology BAD - 94% abnormal

I feel like this is such a step backwards. Just as we were pretty sure I'm oving ok, we get this slap in the face. I'm absolutely gutted.

Any help on supplements or miracle cures would be very much appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your OH results, but please don't give up hope, just remember you only need 1 sperm to reach the egg.

My dh has also got really bad sperm results (I also have PCOS) and our FS has put me on Clomid for 6 months to see if that helps but she said we will really have to go down the IVF root because of the sperm results, but just wanted the 6 months to see if we could make lifestyle changes.

The changes:

Good multi vitamin (with Vits A, B12, B6, C, E, Folic acid, Selenium, Manganese, Zinc, Co-Enzyme Q10, EFA,)
Amino Acids - L-arginine, L-Carnitine and taurine
NO hot baths
NO heated car seats
Mega reduced alchole intake (and he never drank a lot in the first place)
No cycling (only use a bike if you have a special seat for the man areas - no they dont get squashed and hot!)

This is all I can think of for the moment, but if you have any more questions please shout xxx

My OH had terrible SA results too, he now takes Maca, Zinc, Vit a, c, e and selenium he'll be having another SA at the end of march when we go for our IVF consultation and he will have been taking them for 3 months at that time so I will be able to let you know whether there were any changes.

He also cut out alcohol and coffee.

Stupid Dr who gave us the results back in Dec had said everything was fine .. only when I rang up to ask for a referral did she mention this ...

We had a similar problem. Dr said "everything is fine" and didn't make a big thing out of the morphology. I'd been warned this might be the case by m acupunturist so asked for a copy of the results. Only by looking at it ourselves did we see there was a problem.

I hope you are getting some help now, did they give you any advice about what to do? my dh is having a second test done this week just as a bit of a second opinion. I'm sure you would be entitled to ask for another test just to check.

Hiya,

My ex's results were along those lines with his SA and he has in the last 6 months got 2 women pregnant(!) He gave up smoking and started zinc whilst we were together but when we split, started all his bad habits again and somehow got these women pregnant. I was fuming to say the least. I think the point to my post is, the quality of the sperm can be dramatically changed and it does really make a difference.

It's always seems to be the way, people get pregnant who don't want to!
Thanks for your advice. He's going back for another test on Tuesday so we'll see what they say. Results took nearly a month last time though, so wait and see!!

I am currently on the waiting list for ICSI due to DH's poor SA.

However.... he only had a count of 1 million with 25% motility and morphology was 50%. He took 1000mg of vit c every day, Maca and wellman tablets and his count has gone up to 8 million - no improvement with motility/morphology but he is still having warm baths due a broken shower.

So the herbal treatments can definitely help and he is due to have another SA end of next month which might show further improvement. It's always recommended to have at least 2 SA's and you need to make sure they are done 70-90 days apart as this is the time it takes for sperm to mature! good luck!x

What has your GP said re moving forward?

My DH has had a poor SA too, with only 3% normal forms and low motility. 2 doctors have said this is a 'fertile' result and 2 have said its abnormal. Its very frustrating. DH is doing a 3rd sample in a week or so, so we shall see.

Thanks for your post. I've also got dh on wellman, maca, 1000mgvit c!! He has another test tomorrow, that'll only be 6 weeks since the last one but I think dr just wanted to check on first results. That's all they've said, nothing else has been discussed. Because his count is ok and morpholgy is borderline, I think we'll have to push for much more at the moment.

Do you know how long you will have to wait for any more news?

The problem we found was that as overall count was ok, they ignored motility and morphology. I'm not sure gps are the best ones to see about SA. Are you seeing a specialist or gp?

Im so sorry, my dh has the same thing. His morphology is the main issue. There is one vitamin that will improve morphology which is called pycnogenol. I started my dh on that last week, along with Fertilaid. He also was diagnosed with a varicocele vein last week, has your dh been checked for that yet? We have been through ivf with icsi, which over comes these issues, however, I had very bad luck at the place I went and if dh's sperm count does not imprve will be going to a much better place.

I know!! It's so ironic that you need to get the sample to the hospital so quickly for them to do the tests and then they take soooooo long to get the results back to you!! I would happily pay at a private clinic to get the results quickly but there is nowhere near us.

I hope oh's results were all ok.

yes Daniel results looks fine from what i can tell ...(we can view them for his own medical records website) i am waiting on our doc to let us know what she think but when they send the results they give you the guides lines of the normal range with it ...

yes 2 weeks it's ridiculous really...!!!
