So Poppy is a week old today, i think i feel ready to post about her birth.
August 28th - 40+2
Had a midwife appointment, i was hoping for a sweep but the midwife said no and booked it in for 41 weeks, around 5pm i started getting BHs, they weren't painful but i was noticing that there was alot more than i was used to. I carried on my evening as normal then went to bed, i woke a couple of times in the night with these BHs, they still weren't painful just uncomfortable....
August 29th - 40+3
A few hours after we got up, i noticed i was still having these BHs and they were fairly regular (around 10 minutes apart) they were also getting a bit painful.
I posted on the home birth chat group on Facebook as i was unsure whether to call a midwife out to check me. I decided that I would wait until lunchtime then start timing the pains, if they were regular then id call a midwife.
Lunchtime came and i was still getting frequent pain so I started timing them, they were regular-ish, coming every 4-7 minutes and lasting over a minute. I called a midwife, she arrived at 3:30pm, she took me upstairs to examine me and was surprised when i was 4-5cm!
She called the second midwife and informed her i was in labour but only 4-5cm dilated so not to rush over. She decided to stay though as my labour with Logan was so fast.
I carried on having contractions and the pain started getting worse. We sent Logan to his grandparents at 4pm so he could have his dinner and get settled if he had to stay the night.
The second midwife arrived at around 5pm.
At some point before i was checked again (which was at 7:30pm) there was a shift change and 2 new midwives arrived.
At 7:30pm when i was checked again i was still at 4-5cm, the midwife said she wasn't sure if id progressed as it was a different midwife that checked me before.
OHs parents texted saying they were sending Logan home as they couldn't get him to sleep, which i was absolutely furious about! OH went to pick him up and luckily he fell to sleep in the car on the way home, OH managed to get him into bed without waking him.
I carried on contracting irregularly and the pain started becoming unmanageable, i was having awful back pain and felt sick.
I was cuddling Steve during contractions and was moaning too as they were so painful. Once the contraction passed i was fine though, chatting and laughing etc. I was exhausted though, i really wanted to sleep! Some of the contractions were so painful i was throwing up.
I was checked again at 11:30pm and was 9cm dilated but her head wasn't engaged and my waters were bulging. They told me to walk up and downstairs to try and get her head to engage which would hopefully break my waters.
I was checked again at 12:30 and was still 9cm and her head hadn't budged! My body was pushing and i was trying to fight it which was hurting so bad! The midwife said all my water was in the back which is probably why i was in so much pain with my back.
The midwives had a chat and decided they weren't willing to break my waters as there was a risk of the cord dropping beneath baby's head as she wasn't engaged. They rang an ambulance so i could be transferred in to have my waters broken. OH had to call his parents to come over and watch Logan (who was surprisingly still asleep upstairs) they arrived just after the ambulance, i was kicking up a fuss because the midwives were telling me to put some shoes on as it was raining but i was adamant i wanted to go barefoot!
I started on the gas and air in the ambulance as laying on my back made the contractions worse, my body was really trying to push at this point and it was so hard and painful to try and stop it.
When we got to hospital i was rushed into a room with a doctor waiting, she introduced herself and explained the situation, all i heard was the word 'fatal' and started panicking, OH had followed behind the ambulance so wasn't with me at this point.
The doctor explained that the baby wasn't engaged and her position meant that when my waters broke the cord would drop down and her head would press on it cutting off her supply so she needed to hold the baby's head up while she broke my water and then guide the baby's head into my pelvis....
OH arrived while the doctor went to get her 'tools' i was so glad to have him by my side.
The doctor came in with a couple of midwives, it was around 2am at this point.
They started the process of breaking my waters, i had two midwives pressing down on my stomach and the doctors arm up my bits, it was so painful at first when the doctor had her arm up me holding the baby's head, then i had a contraction while her arm was up there which was the most excruciating thing ive ever felt! I was shouting 'oww you motherfucker' and 'you fucking bitch' at the doctor
then i felt a huuuuuge gush which went on for ages, i looked down and could see water coming out of me like projectile vomit!! The doctor was soaked and both midwives had stepped back! There was so much water!!! I then shouted 'my fanny feels like white noise' as it was tingling from pain and i could feel the gushing. Everyone laughed and then i got the giggles, i was laughing until my next contraction, in this contraction my body gave a huuuge push and her head was out (2:19am) I had another contraction straight after and my beautiful daughter Poppy Leigh was born at 2:20am! They placed her on me and my first thought was how much she looked like her big brother
She weighed 8lb1oz.
I was checked for tears and only had a slight graze which didn't need stitches. My placenta had to be pulled from me for some reason.
OH cut the cord and while he was doing it he placed his car keys on my pillow which slid down and got stuck in my hair!
Poppy latched on great and fed from me for a while. OH went home at 3am so his mum could go home.
I barely got any sleep that night, i hate hospitals and sleeping on my own. Plus Poppy was feeding nearly constant. At 6am the nurse came and offered to watch Poppy while i showered, i agreed and went to shower.
Not long after i got in the shower i felt a gush and looked down to see my legs and the bottom of the shower covered in blood! This happened 5 times and i started feeling a bit dizzy, i pulled the emergency cord because i didn't feel right at all, the midwife came rushing in, she took one look at me all covered in blood and helped me onto the toilet where i had another gush then passed out. I could feel myself all floppy and heard the buzzer going off as the midwife had called for help. I couldn't move or even open my eyes. I felt cold and like i was going to die!
I was semi concious being wheeled into my room and put onto my bed, then the doctor came in to examine me, she said i had alot of clots that needed removing, they gave me gas and air and then the doctor literally put her hands in me and scooped out all the clots while another midwife pressed on my stomach it was so painful and i shouted 'why do you enjoy hurting me so much?!' I looked at her and she looked really upset so i apologised and blamed the gas and air.
Once the clots were all removed i had to have some fluids through a drip and some anti sickness meds. They estimated my blood loss at just under 1L.
OH came to visit me at 12, he brought Logan with him, Logan was so excited to see Poppy and instantly made the connection that she was the baby in my belly, he said 'Poppy out mummys belly. Poppy not in there, Poppy here'
They left at 2pm.
I was transferred to the ward as another delivery was coming in and they needed my bed.
I was discharged at 5pm and OHs parents came to pick me and Poppy up as OH had no sleep and felt too tired to drive.
Poppy is doing great, she has been bottlefed since we arrived home, she's gone from waking every hour to feed, to waking every 2-3 hours she's lost a little weight and weighs 7lbs15oz now.
Logan is amazing with her, absolutely adores her. He loves stroking her head and cuddling her. He helps with feeds and tries sharing his toys
Being a mum of 2 is so tiring, I'm constantly busy, but its most definitely worth it. Both my kids are awesome
