Our beautiful little girl Tanwen was born on 19th December 2011 at 41+2 weighing 8lb 5oz!
In the end, I had a fairly easy labour on just TENS during the latent phase and gas and air for the active! I wasn't impressed at all by the 9 day latent phase that started the day before my due date! It was terribly uncomfortable and frustrating! Things kicked off in earnest at 2:30am on December 19th though and by 4:30am I'd had a bloody show, my contractions had got much worse and I just knew that I was ready to head into the hospital! I arrived at the hospital at 5am and was taken straight to a delivery room, which really made me start believing that this was it as when I'd gone in previously I'd been put in a small labour waiting room! At 6am I had an internal check and was found to be at 6cm dilated! I still thought that I had hours to go and by this point the gas and air was starting to get on my nerves as I didn't feel much better for it and I was starting to go light headed, feel sick and my mouth was really dry! By about 7:30am- 8am I asked for the epidural, just to call the midwife back about 15 minutes later because I was starting to feel ready to push! I was told that the anesthetist was at least 20 minutes away and, after another internal check that told me I was very nearly fully dilated, I decided that I'd go without as I really didn't want to run the risk of slowing things down when I was so close! At 8:30 I was checked again and this time I was given the go ahead to push. I had in the room my husband, 2 midwives and a medical student (who was obviously just observing!)! I don't really remember much of the pushing stage. My husband was brilliant, my rock, and he really kept me going through the worst of it. I had one moment of weakness about half way through where I really didn't think I could manage it anymore. I was exhausted and it felt so much longer than it actually was! My sense of time had completely evaporated! In the end I was only actually pushing for an hour: she was born at 9:30am exactly, and I was only in active labour for about 6 hours! Tanwen is absolutely perfect and I had a really positive birth experience overall! The worst part was definitely the stitches afterwards- I had a 2nd degree tear- and I think that was mostly because I looked up at the wrong time and saw the huge needle that they use to administer the local anesthetic!
Here's a couple of pictures!
