This is very long, didn't intend for it to be, just couldnt shut up once I got started
After suffering a partial molar pregnancy in July 2011, DH and I were absolutely terrified when we got out bfp on Jan 6th this year. Pregnancy did not go as smoothly as it did the first time, after suffering from hydronephrosis, spd an irritable uterus and multiple hospital stays to monitor me, by the last week of pregnancy I was more than ready to meet this little person!
I had a consultant appointment on the Friday 14th September- My due date! I was ready to go in and beg to be induced, I had had enough. When the midwife was doing my obs before the appointment, my blood pressure was through the roof! 145/98 was the first reading, when normal for me is 100/60! I was put on a monitor for an hour as baby was quiet and they kept checking my bp. When I finally seen my consultant, I had geared myself up to cry at him I sat down, he scoured my notes and said, as your term today and your bp is high (and I had a headache since the Monday) we will send you upstairs to induce you!! I didnt even get a chance to beg lol!
So up we went, I seen a midwife (I knew most of them on a first name basis by now) and was told they had 2 high risk girls in so I wouldnt be induced til the next day! After phoning to arrange a babysitter and my DH in work I just had to wait, DH came up as soon as he could and kept me company. It was so nerve wracking, knowing I was going to go into labour soon as I went naturally with DD and she was early. I asked for pain killers for my headache and asked the mw whether I was likely to be induced the next day. The answer I got was that as my bp had dropped it was a controversial induction and the consultant on the next morning would probably override his decision as they dont normally induce for just a headache... this was worrying, I'd psyched myself up for it and it probably wouldnt happen! Turns out she was a b*tch as she said some other things to me and then slagged me of to her colleagues, needless to say I had a good b*tch about her to another mw who apologised and told her off!
I explained to DH the next morning it may not happen and we would probably be going home and he prepared a huge speech to say to the consultant if she tried to override my consultants decision. Again, this wasnt needed as she felt the same as my consultant and said it would have been different if I wasnt term! I was so pleased A registrar did a sweep and inserted the 'teabag' at half 11 and I was put on the monitor for an hour and a half. I had warned DH beforehand that we would likely be there for a few days as they usually take ages,so we were prepared for a wait. I started having contractions at about 12:45 but put them down to false contractions from my irritable uterus. Mw took me off machine and told us to stay mobile so we planned to go for lunch in the shop nearby. I got out of the bed and went for a pee and could hardly walk!! Half 1 my contractions were coming every 4 minutes and were painful! I stayed standing and leant out the window but they were becoming increasingly strong. At about 3pm DH went to get my mum as we didnt think it would be long.
Mw checked me and put me on monitor at 4pm for half hour to see how I was doing. Firstly she said I was 5-6cms and I was gobsmacked!! She then changed her mind and said I was 3 which was still better than I thought. Contractions were now every 1-2 mins and so painful I couldnt talk through them. Every now nd then my mum would whip the camcorder out and film a little bit at this stage. At half 6 I asked for pain relief and was given gas and air which really helped believe it or not. There was practically not break in between contractions from then onwards and at half 7 I asked for an epidural, which I now kind of regret because looking back I think I could have managed without.I agreed to an internal first and was told by student mw that I was 8cm, so I said there was no point. At 8pm the trained mw asked if she could check me again and asked if the student could break my waters as it would speed things up a bit for me and I agreed, the student had got it wrong and I was actually only 6-7cms - Gutted lol! I didnt mind though, as the mw was checking me, my waters broke on their own and went everywhere, me and the mw were soaked! At this point I said I wanted to have the epidural after all as I had a while to go. So anaesthetist was called and epidural put in. It took the edge off but I still needed g&a for the contractions! I was so calm in between contractions that they didnt believe I was in labour lol.
Staff changed at 9ish ad contractions really picked up, and at half 10 I felt the urge to push. Mw examined me and said I was fully dilated. With my first delivery I was pushing for 3 hours so had mentally prepared myself for this! At 10:40 I started pushing and my mum started filming again! After 3 big pushes the head was delivered and I couldnt believe it. The mw said one more push with the contraction and the baby would be born, but the contraction seemed to take forever. I could see the mws starting to rush and they picked up my legs to help create space and this is when my mum turned the camera off. Luckily the contraction started building and mw helped deliver baby onto my chest... baby was blue, not moving and not breathing!! I did not know but the cord was around baby's neck and the longer the contraction took the more serious it become! I was told to rub the baby and help scare some life into it. The mw cut the cord, and applogised to my mum who was going to do it, and whisked baby to the resusiteur (sp?) to give oxygen. The time btween the mw taking baby and hearing that first cry seemed like an eternity but DH tells me it was only about 20secs. They told us I had delivered a baby girl at 11pm on 15th Sept and weighed her at 8lb 15oz, which they had to double check lol!
With baby fine mw delivered the placenta and we thought it was over. DH went to ring family as he thought I was fine but came back in to find drs running in and DH describes what he seen next as a scene from a quentin tarantino movie! I was bleeding a lot. MW would put a small amount of pressure on my abdomen and blood was literally squirting out! I had a dr rubbing my belly quite aggressively to try and encourage a contraction to help stop the bleeding, it was agony, during this I was whining and I started to struggle to stay awake. They then put a speculum in to check to make sure my cervix wasnt bleeding and after the size of the baby that just came out, it was a bit uncomfortable! It took about 45mins to eventually stop the bleeding and I remember looking over to my DH and mum and I could see my mum shaking and DH unsuccessfully trying to stop himself crying! They did laugh afterwards though as through all the painful things that were going on, it took a dr trying to put a canula in my hand for me to say 'ouch that f@#cking hurt'. I didnt get to properly cuddle my daughter until 12:10am, but I totally forgot everything that was going on around me at this point, she was beautiful, a little blue but so worth everything that had just happened! We has skin to skin and she latched perfectly straight away! I lost almost 2litres of blood but as the drs were prepared for it (Im a bleeder apparantly lol) I had taken plenty of iron beforehand so as to not need a transfusion again!!
DH said straight after that I am not allowed any more because they were so scared they were going to lose both of us! But it has not put me off at all, the bundle you get at the end of it makes it all so worth while!!
Well done if you made it this far lol! Introducing my beautiful Carys Rose...
