https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2013/01/09/india-gang-rape-case-lawyer.html This is horrible! I can't believe he's blaming the victims!

It's disgusting. What ever happened to being responsible for ones own actions?! I hope they are all prosecuted to the full extent of the law to show that women matter just as much as men!

His views are exactly why these people need to be prosecuted and go to jail. There needs to be serious change India, it's dreadfully sad that it has taken the death of a woman after she went through such a dreadful ordeal to hopefully make that happen. Lets hope it does happen.

It is uplifting to see that the rest of this country is in complete uproar against this sort of mindset. I hope there is change.

I'm following this with interest along with the case in Steubenville. It seems sexual abuse is a huge topic worldwide at the moment what with Savile and the case at the children's home in North Wales (and probably elsewhere) :(

Many lawyers are ;)

The fact the rest of India is in complete uproar over this at least shows that things may be changing, and hopefully they will. The men were at risk of having no legal representation as no-one would defend them...guess this shows things may be changing also. However i'm pretty sure that 2 of the men still have no representation which could be strong grounds for appeal? So, I guess hopefully someone takes them on, even if they are spouting sh!t like that, just so it prevents them being able to appeal on those grounds (and because it should be a fundamental right I guess).

I'm not convinced the rest of India is in uproar tbh. Yes many young people are and the action groups are, but attitudes like this are still widespread. This is a country where in some districts men outnumber women by 35% because female babies are aborted or murdered https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20938125 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-13264301

I think there is a huge difference in attitudes between the urban, progressive areas and rural areas in India.

Please bear in mind that lawyers often don't share the views of their clients.

This is most likely what his clients have told him, and, like it or not, it's his job to be the mouthpiece for that story.

As lawyers we accept there will be times where we do not like our clients or the things they may or may not have done but they are entitled to representation and as such they get just that to the best of our abilities.

Professionally I find it more abhorrent that the bar association of India was, to start with, stating that these men would not be represented at all.

Agree with you there...even if they didn't have legal representation wouldn't they still have an amicua curaie or whatever who would put across their views? Pretty sure 2 of the men still have no representation which is awful.

Btw my comment about lawyers was not meant offensively, several of my friends are training to be lawyers etc., it is just based on personal experience with ones in my local area, who are mainly pretty corrupt characters!

That is appalling. Those poor, poor victims.

Made me think of this:
