This USA and UK lingo on here makes me LOL!

Sometimes I have to google what other Mothers are talking about from the UK! Like, what in the world is a "push chair?" I think of a wheel chair! Then i realize its a "stroller" here. Also, a "cot" I think of a roll-away bed at a hotel, but i realized its a crib. And "pram" means stroller as well, etc. My mother was actually born and raised in England (moved here when she was 15), so she LOVES reading this website. She usually knows what everyone is talking about!! LOL anyway, i just wanted to make a post about this! Carry on!

A cot and a crib are two different things over here. I can't think of any things that Americans say apart from diapers and pacifiers/ soothers that are significantly different from what is said in the UK but I think that's because we're more accustomed to American lingo from TV shows/ movies.

I realise I've just made a broad generalisation. Apologies for my ignorance but the weather has been extremely warm here today and I'm tired x

Buggy is another word for a stroller - just to confuse things

In my mind though, a buggy and a pushchair are regular strollers, and a pram is one where a baby can lay flat; like a 1950s type one. The term is used for all of them, but traditionally, that's what a pram is.

A crib to me is smaller than a cot but larger than a Moses basket. A Moses basket is pretty much what you'd call a bassinet.

What you'd call a cot in the US, to me, is just a foldaway bed, or a camp bed

A potty in the UK is just used for the little plastic console the kids sit on when they first start potty training. We don't refer to the toilet as a potty. That's called the toilet, or the loo, or the lav or the bog. I personally say loo.

I agree, most Brits realise the differences because we watch US television etc, but for Americans and Canadians it must be harder to keep up. And that's just BABY stuff! There a whole load of differences you haven't come across yet!

its like a plastic version of a Moses basket that comes with a stand that's usually on wheels, have little lights built in and vibrate. there are also wooden versions. I've searched high and low for one here in the UK. my dd loved hers whilst we lived in Canada. i was told different safety regulations means they don't sell them here. x

It's not SUPER baby related, but when I was a teenager I traveled to the UK with a friend of mine and we went to her cousin's 10th birthday. We couldn't see what present she was opening, but she opened a small package and said "oooooh, rubbers!" and my friend and I gave each other a TOTALLY HORRIFIED look.

Her uncle caught our exchanged look and had to explain rubbers are ERASERS, not condoms. Haha.
