Hello
I wanted to do this earlier but oh well here we are.
My yellow bump turned blue (I had a feeling he would be a boy) on September 18, 2012. He was born at 8:55 pm EST. He weighs 6 lbs and is 20 inches long.
At 3:45 am that morning I felt a little period type cramping which I had experienced a little of in the week leading up. I thought "sigh I don't care to have this for the next few weeks. " so I turned over and felt a little gush of fluid. I figured it was just some extra discharge but I had to pee so got up to use bathroom to go see. When I went to sit more fluid came out. I looked and there was no color or smell. At this point I immediately posted here in third tri and then I called my mother (since she is three hours behind and I know her labor started with waters trickling). She told me that it sounded like waters and to call midwives. So I did.
(ironically I had had my 36 week appt where they visit the house and bring the tub not even 12 hours before. And that had been rescheduled from this Friday-thank goodness!!)
They asked about fluid color and how I felt and to try and get some sleep then and that they would be there later in the morning. I went upstairs (4:30 by this time) and said to hubby "were having a baby today!" of course he jolted out of bed and started walking around the room. I laughed and told him to calm down and go back to bed it would be a few hours.
My mom told me to go about normal day (I was scheduled to work) but I decided to call my boss and tell him I would not be in. I didn't want to be working on a patient (I'm a dental hygienist) while having contractions!
Up until 6:30 am I only felt general back and uterus achiness typical to a period.
Around 6:30 ish there started to be a pattern of contractions on top of the general achiness of about 9 minutes apart and 1-2 minutes long. It was uncomfortable but not really needing to breathe through them. I rested with a towel between my legs (I hadn't had any pads or supplies prepared) but wasn't able to really sleep. Intestines were also clearing out at this point.
I think about 8 or 9 am I had some breakfast-a slice of toast with jam and butter and most of a soft boiled egg. Around 9 am contractions were 6 minutes apart and 1-2 minutes long.
I decided to take a shower to help and clean uP around 10 am. The midwives showed up when I got out at 10:30. The warm water did help a good deal. They hooked me up to a monitor for the contractions and fetal heartbeat. Contractions about 5 minutes apart and lasting 1 minute and they said the baby was responding beautifully. They told me to keep in touch and that when contractions got more difficult to call them. They left around 11:45. At this point I was just wiggling my toes and breathing slow when they occurred.
My friend had offered to help so she came over around 1:45 to get a list from us of what we needed for the birth. I was still laying on couch. When she left I decided that I would try another shower while husband filled the birth tub ( laying on left side on couch made them worse).
Hubby came into shower with me and I leaned on him since they were starting to increase to 3-4 minutes and lasting a minute and more intense.
When I got out he insisted to call midwives to get them and filled the tub. It was taking a lot more concentration and breathing to get through. Sitting on the toilet to pee was awful!! Made the pressure and contractions so much worse!
After that I stripped to just a sport bra and got in the tepid tub. It felt good but didn't give the immediate relief some women feel. Midwives showed up soon after. About 3:30pm
I kept waiting for the contractions to get worse. They stayed at about 3 minutes apart and 1 minute long. Tried hard to keep face and shoulders relaxed. I started by sitting and holding myself up with hands during contractions. They kept periodically checking the baby's heartbeat which stayed up really well. (there was possibility I would have to get out to birth if heart rate wasn't good due to gestational age).
I remember asking them when transition would happen and they seemed to think I was close to it or in it. (they didn't do any cervical checks)
Around 5:30 I started feeling some little involuntary urges to push.
During these contractions I was breathing very heavy and vocalizing (also involuntary). They spaced out a bit at this point.
I kept watching the clock thinking "ok hopefully one more hour" the midwives did warn me that pushing can take longer in a tub due to not as much gravity working. Towards the end when they started to see the head they told me to keep trying to switch positions which I was hesitant about because that seemed to spur on contractions. I was on all fours and then switched back to sitting and then finally back on all fours.
It was funny because I felt like I could fall asleep between contractions. Husband and midwives helped by keeping me drinking Gatorade and water. I was getting hungry towards the end but didn't dare eat anything.
I kept asking them any progress? Any progress? I could feel baby coming out and going back in. When he started crowning I was so concerned about tearing but just went with the pushes. I only pushed with the urges so it did take about 3 hours or so to push him out. Boy! They don't lie about the immense and immediate sense of relief when that baby comes out! All pain and contractions immediately stopped and it felt so good to have him out. I didn't poop either. I did pee but I was in a tub so it didn't matter.
He was covered in vernix due to him being four weeks early and it took him a couple minutes to cry. And he certainly cried! They had me get out to the couch so the baby could get warmer. I laid back holding him until the cord stopped pulsing and a few minutes beyond that. They had hubby cut the cord. The placenta took a while coming out. They gave me a little herbal concoction to help and that came out about an hour later. That was another sense of relief! They had me try latching him on which he did but he didn't really suckle too much. Hubby held and sang to him and then I was tucked in for bed with baby on the couch. Midwives left at around midnight.
They said I had a very very minor graze on the skin but I dont feel it. Peeing immediately after was no problem.
I do feel some pressure in my bum when I stand still and a little stomach ache probably from the muscles for pushing. And I've already gone #2 and that also was no problem. Milk is starting to come in now and he has a much better latch and much stronger sucking already!
He's such a good boy so far. And labor honestly went easier than I thought I would! My worst pain in my life was actually a period at age 16. This was more manageable than that!!
Well sorry for the novel but I thank everybody for their love and support Tuesday I really appreciated it!!!

1. One day old
2. One week old (first car ride to pediatrician. Kind of a bad pic)
3. First bath! 11 days old
4. 12 or 13 days old just before bed time

I admired your calmness while you were posting in the thread in the third tri. It sounds like you were calm during the whole process. You're one strong woman!! Huge congrats again :flower:

Thank you all so so much :) I really really appreciated everybody's comments, it helped a lot. I just felt bad that I didn't update after around 3pm but I had gotten into the tub, and didn't want to risk dropping my phone in there!! :)
I didn't get to read about childbirthing methods as much as I wanted to, but the thing that helped the most was trying to keep my face mouth and shoulders relaxed during the contractions (easier said than done!!), and trying to take deep slow breaths from the diaphragm, blowing out through mouth slowly.
The break between them was amazing. Almost felt like I could fall asleep between! (Almost like taking a pain med for your period type feeling-little drowsy until the next one).

Hahaha, he does NOT look like he's one the same page as mommy when it comes to bath time :P
