I had my baby July 16th. Got a fever and aches and right breast became painful on Saturday night (a few days ago). Went to er Sunday morning and was told it was mastitis and they gave me keflex/ cephlexin or whatever the generic name is. I was told if my fever persisted or got worse to come back or go to my doctor. Started feeling much better by yesterday ...but woke up again today with a fever of almost 102. My fiance was being a huge help last night and feeding my expressed milk to Charlie so I could pump and rest in the night. Well I accidentally slept for six hours w/out getting up to pump and I'm wondering if that might be why? I've also been pumping mass amounts... when I finally pumped this morning I got 10 oz and the same thing happened last night before bed. Anyway, I made an appt with my doc for later today but I was just looking for insight on whether you all thought I caused this by sleeping through for six hours :( i know you arent doctors and like i said i have an appt but im wondering if i made it worse or if it isnt actually mastitis. My boob feels much better now but my nipples have been stinging pretty badly...i just thought it was normal. i feel so stupid for doing that ...ugh

Ok I had mastitis in the beginning with my first daughter. I waited awhile as I didn't really know what was going on. Got really bad went to my OB, was put onthat same antibiotic for 7 days. Everything felt better, looked better, thought I was good. The day after I finished the antibiotics, it came back with a vengeance. Was horrible. I was put back in antibiotics ( this time for 14 days) and I actually had to go to a surgeon to have it drained. It turned out I had a blocked duct, from a bad latch the second day she was born. It clipped the duct and caused it to be blocked and bacteria pooled there and caused a hell of an infection. I went to have it drained twice, stayed on the antibiotics, and pumped both boobs after each feed ( which was extremely annoying during the night feeds) to a make sure there was not a drop left. And after this I was good to go. So your symptoms of extreme pain, fever, sound like mastitis rather than just going too long. I would finish those antibiotics, and make sure you drain completely with those feeds so you don't end up how I did. And do go back to dr if fever and symptoms don't improve!

My mastitis was caused by engorgement and a badly fitting bra. I also had badly grazed nipples. As above I also ended up with an abscess fact was drained 6 times. Just make sure you keep your boobs as soft as you can just now and massage them in the shower to work-out any blocked bits. Also massage the affected area when feeding. Mastitis can be caused by numerous breastfeeding issues and apparently mine was a combination of stuff. I haven't answered your question really - sorry! It could have been caused by enforcement from sleeping for too long but if your breasts weren't engorged when you woke then it is unlikely to be that. 6hr sleep must have been bliss!

I had mastitis but luckily very mild. I spent the day in bed sleeping with lo on the boob constantly feeding and felt much better by the evening. Try to offer feeds as often as possible to help speed recovery.
