Hi all

I've been ttc since may 2011. Stopped bcp in may 2011 after long term use

I'm 33 as of Friday !

Owing to nipple lactation and absent periods / weird spotting - which wasn't present while I was on bcp ( can't tell u how many times I thought I was pregnant only to be disappointed) ... My dear doctor agreed to start bloods and other tests. Partners sperm is fine. All my levels are fine - except thyroid (tsh 25 and t4 11) - very bad

so I had my answer was chuffed - started on 150 mg thyroxine in feb - but dose too high and levels went to other extreme (from 25 to 0.1) I'm now on 100mcg, feel ok. Waiting next results.

I'd be interested in chatting with anyone else here with experiences of this and also successes .... How long after treatment did you conceive?

Many thanks xxx

Hi!
I was on thyroid medication with both of my children - I was diagnosed about a year before we were ttc- and had no trouble conceiving either of them (first cycle off birth control). You do want to get your tsh pretty low (I've read a tsh between 1-2 is ideal for conception), and get it tested about every 4-6 weeks once you do conceive. My synthroid dosage went up 25mcg each time I was pregnant, all in the first trimester. It will also fluctuate a lot in the postpartum period.
Glad they figured out you are hypothyroid - this will probably get your cycles back on track! (Being hypothyroid can also cause slightly elevated prolactin levels, which would explain your nipple discharge.) I assume they tested your prolactin?
Good luck!

Hi Sarah

Did your doctor put you on 150mg straight away? Thats quite dangerous from what i understand, my miscarriage consultant said i would have a heart attack if they put me on a high dosage immediately, you have to introduce it slowly

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism after my 3rd mmc (miscarriages possibly due to hypothyroidism, i had no idea)

My tsh was 9.27 in oct and i was started on 25mg, i went to see a professor in gynae who upped my dosage to 50mg and my tsh was 5.24 at that point, tsh was 1.3 in dec, perfect for ttc but unfortuntely my consultant hadnt given us the all clear to try.

I don't know what happened in Jan but it shot up to 41.3 so thyroxine was increased to 75mg. I got so fed up with the docs increasing it at such a slow rate that i went to see an endocrinologist who in the space of 5 weeks has taken my dosage from 100 to 175mg

You must keep an eye on your tsh as soon as you know you are pregnant becuase the professor that i seen was convinced my miscarriages were due to my thyroid problem , like another poster said, it needs to be between 1.-2 whilst ttc and when you are pregnant

It might be worth getting another blood test to see if you test positive for thyroid antibodies, i tested positive for this so basically i have auto immune thyroid disease that is attacking my thyroid causing it to be underactive! Oh the joys of wanting a baby

Good luck
