Hi there!

I knew my son had tics but today it was confirmed. He has six, forceful/fast blinking, wide mouth opening, sniffing, inhaling, lip smacking (quietly) and coughing/throat clearing and he does these almost all day everyday and they started over a year ago.

He starts primary school in August and I wonder how any other parents dealt with it? Meetings with teachers, updates with them through the year etc? I'd like something in place so I can be kept updated and just wondered if any other parents have done anything similar or do you just let the teacher know and leave it at that? His are pretty much constant so I do worry about it being disruptive to himself and others. Thanks!

When my son was diagnosed we were given information for the school and for his teacher on how to deal with tics, my son was also given some information for himself on understanding tics and we photocopied it and gave it to his friends in school so they could read about why he does what he does. I dont have meetings with the teachers apart from his parent/teacher meetings twice a year. At the minute I feel his school is handling it very well but if I did have any concerns then I would arrange a meeting then. I think as long as the school know about his condition and have the information they need then things should be fine :) I suppose if you wanted you could make up a little record book and ask his teacher to comment in it each day so you know how things are going.

Our nursery passed over the info to school, their way of handling it at school ready for Sep was noting down what happens, distributing a copy of that and how we handle it to school nurse, teacher, the senco, and I can't remember who else one or two others, and just keeping it on records. School senco said there's no real need to meet with the teacher although of course you and I could approach the teachers which the senco said was fine if we wished, her reasons for a teacher not needing to formally discuss this prior was because tics are so changeable our children's tics could go once they begin school with the structure school brings. It's worth you letting the school know in some way perhaps send a note in with up to date tics. If your child does one which gets misinterpreted you can then refer back to what you've made them aware of. I was told to update them when new tics come, which is frequently I'm glad they care enough to of asked that. If you let them know they'll be able to reassure you With how they handle things with current similar children.
