I would love to hear some tips for keeping the tree alive and happy!!

Mine never does well no matter what I do...and last year I managed to short circuit one of the strings of lights by spilling water

So what do you do to keep your tree green and full of needles?

Just water it everyday, some can take over a pint a day. I think there is something you can put in the water, not sure what though.

I bought a real tree last year, bought a stand to put it in and all that, watered it everyday and it died within a week..Bald as a coot it was..
I was so annoyed with it I ended up wrestling with it for half hr trying to get it out the front door, bloody thing..

I'm going to stick to the potted ones in future as they seem to last me ages.
Aslong as they are watered every day and not sitting next to a radiator or what not they seem to do quite well.

When you say potted trees, do you mean trees that still have roots attached?

We used to have a potted tree but last year I wanted a big tree and potted trees are usually quite small. We regulary watered it and it still looked really good after Christmas. My Mum puts the truck in a bucket of water and leaves it outside for 24 hours before decorating it. I was going to do that but got too impaitient and wanted to decorate it straight away.

Buy a fur tree rather than a real christmas tree, they tend to be thicker, smell nicer, last longer & have softer needles so better for children & pets.

Stand it outside in a bucket of water for 24-48 hours before decorating.

Dont put it near a radiator.

Buy a stand that will allow the bottom to be in water & make sure there is plenty of water in everyday.

I love christmas trees, some of the best memorys from childhood christmases is the smell of the tree as you come down in a morning :)

Any advice for a first timer?

I had an artificial tree last year and ive decided to get a real one this year.

What kind of stand do i need? And when do you think i should get the tree as i still want it to be alive for xmas :haha:

If you are in london & collect that exact one its very good value, i have the same one & it cost me £30.

You idealy want something like that tho as the bottom of the tree is clamped in to a big trough that can be filled with water & you wont have to water it every day.

I always recomend getting it as close to christmas as possible. I have always had the 12 days tradition, we will go buy our tree round the 11th of december & leave it outside in a bucket of cold water for a couple of days first then put it up either 13th or 14th. Aslong as its not too near heat, its watered well its always lasted untill the 12th night after christmas.

fur trees are the ones that are slightly lighter in color and with needles that don't hurt you right? thanks for the tip!!

That would be perfect if i lived in London, but i dont.

Do you think this one would be ok?

Yes that looks good love because you can still fill it with water to feed the tree.

With it been cast iron it will make a nice heavy base but also if the coating wears off over time you would have to re paint it with hammerite or other metal paint to stop it going rusty.

Hope you enjoy your christmas with a real tree this year :)
