My 14 month old is still such a terrible eater, he gags on pretty much everything. Im really starting to worry now because he just doesn't want to eat anything, I'm lucky if he eats half a weetabix all day. i have tried all sorts of food but he just isn't interested/can't chew and swallow I don't know which one it is. I've recently started thinking that it his tongue tie that is preventing him from being able to chew his food properly because most of the time he just tries to swallow everything whole and it terrifies me when he starts gagging, he then gets upset and won't eat anything after that. Has anyone had anything similar to this, my health visitor just suggested we keep persisting with his food but I've been doing this since he was 6 months old (although he never really had actual solids until he was about 8/9months) can a tongue tie affect eating? he also still hasn't slept through, he still wakes up for milk every 4 hours at night and I definetly think that's down to the lack of food he is getting in the day. He is on multi vitamin drops but I know this isn't a replacement for what he should be getting from his food.

I'm sure I've read that it can stop them from eating well because food gets stuck to the roof of their mouth and they can't clear it effectively. I would imagine it also makes it difficult to move food around the mouth to chew it properly.

I'd definitely speak to a GP or someone other than the HV who offered no useful advice.

Agree with pp that i do believe it could be the cause.

I know this wouldn't be ideal, but you could work on your lo skill with a spoon ad move back into puree or slightly thicker for a little bit to see if it makes a difference.

My youngest has tounge tie which I pointed out to HV and Dr as they had not noticed. We have an appointment with specialist January to decide whether or not to cut as all though no problem with breast feeding the Dr said it can cause problem with weaning and speech so it must have some impact

Thank you for your replys I'm going to make an appointment with my GP

Maisie had tongue tie. It did affect her eating to some extent, she didnt really chew just swallowed. Luckily she finally got her appointment at just over 6 months (it had been diagnosed at day 5 by the midwife and took 6 months for an appointment to come!) and she had it cut by a specialist nurse. I definitely noticed an improvement. Have they never offered to cut it? Xx
