Where should I go for a second opinion about a possible tongue tie for my little guy? I asked his pediatrician to look, and she did and said he had good mobility, but she didn't seem very knowledgeable (I've read you're supposed to look with baby lying flat, but she just looked with him sitting on my lap).

We live in the US, so there's insurance to consider, and we have Kaiser, so everything is really difficult when getting second opinions. I'll pay out-of-pocket, but I'm just not sure who to see. The Kaiser LCs haven't been super helpful.

Where I live it is a dentist that assesses and releases tongue ties. Could you google to try to find a dentist in your area who does it?

Thanks! I just googled my hometown and "tongue tie" and found a dentist. Why I didn't think of that, who knows! :)

Hi! My 2 month old had her lip and tongue tie procedure yesterday. We went to a pediatric dentist and our dental insurance covered 80% of it.

Her regular pediatrician also said her lip tie wasn't so bad, so I went to the pediatric dentist and discovered she had a mild tongue tie as well. Doesn't hurt to get a consult at least.

Or a breastfeeding counselor. I had loads of midwives and peds look in my daughter's mouth, but none of them really seemed to know what they were looking for. We went to a local breastfeeding support group run by a BF counselor and she was easily able to explain what was going on. I would expect that would be free as well. A BF counselor wouldn't be able to snip it (in which case I'd see whoever she recommended, often I do think it's dentists in the U.S., here midwives can do it if they're trained), but she could probably tell you better than most what's going on. You also don't even need to be BF. I wasn't anymore when we finally sought out a diagnosis.

I brought him to a dentist today. He said he was slightly tongue tied, but the location and severity would be very unlikely to cause any feeding issues. He said it could cause speech issues later, but he'd rather see him again when he's older to check again before doing anything. I'm glad of the plan; I was a little concerned seeking a diagnosis from the person who would do the release might mean he's more inclined to suggest it as he stands to gain from it financially. Terrible thought, I know, but I'm VERY disillusioned by our country's health care!

It can often be useful to feel what is happening when your baby sucks your finger. Do they cup it with their tongue over the top of the lower gums, can you feel it squeezing upwards and creating suction?
