Hey ladies. I'm curious if any of you have experienced tongue tie with your newborns and if you got the corrective procedure done. My pediatrician noticed it but the procedure sounded painful so I haven't followed up with and ENT but this baby is killing my nipples so I'm really considering it. Any advice? Did anyone's baby just grow out of it? How was the recovery process?

I'm going to call and make an appointment tomorrow, just wanted a little info before we go in.

Thanks

My lo had a very mild tie (specialist said it didn't really need curing but they did it anyway) it took 2 seconds and he didn't notice. He was about a week old tho.

It bled a little for about 15 mins but that's it

I think the longer u leave it the bigger a procedure it is and it has to be numbed etc

My nephew had it - apparently they hardly notice (though I suppose in very severe cases it might be a more difficult procedure) and they can feed straight away, which involves plenty of tongue movement, so it can't be that painful. Apparently they can be a little grouchy as it heals but it only takes a few days. Babies' bodies replenish incredibly quickly!

I would have it done - he will never remember that it happened, whereas you may well have to live with soreness and discomfort until he weans. It will probably be far worse for you than it is for him - my daughter had her first injections the other day and I nearly burst into tears and felt bad all day, whereas she screamed for about ten seconds and then fell asleep lol!

My baby had a severe one that wasn't picked up until day 5, by then my nipples were in shreds and bleeding. We got the procedure done at 7 days and it has been a lot better since.
My nipples still hurt every now and then but nothing like before.
In the UK or atleast where I went they won't do it for all cases only ones where they think the tie will effect the baby
Good luck

Thanks for all your responses & reassurance . I'm setting up an appt to get him looked at. He's 9 days now so my goal is to have it done by 2 weeks..my nipples will really appreciate it!

definitely get it down. When my LO had it done, I think it hurt me more then it hurt her. I cringed at the thought of them hurting my baby. But she hardly cried. She cried more about the being wrapped up so that she couldn't move around too much then she did when they actually snipped it.
The froze under her tongue, wrapped her up in a blanket. Snipped the tie and pressed on it to stop the little bit of bleeding. Unwrapped her passed her to me and I fed her right away. She was content as soon as she suckled and for me, finally feeding didn't hurt.
She was 3 weeks old when I had it done.

My lo has a mild tongue tie but a fairly severe upper lip tie and at 7 months I'm regretting that I didn't push to have something done about it. I have successfully exclusively bf her but it's been very difficult she only ever feeds for short periods so still feeds 2 hourly day and night and has suffered with reflux. My main concern now is that her lip tie will affect her teeth as there is a huge lump of skin from her lip all the way to behind her gum :(

Follow your gut and keep pushing to see the right people. I wish I had

Ended up getting the lip & tongue tie procedure for my LO. The procedure was quick but he's still not use to the freedom of his tongue. Sometimes he latches properly and others he's just on the nipple. Going to a breastfeeding support group meeting Monday. Hoping it gets better, cause my nipples are killing me..

I think it will get better for you. He just needs practice. As you say he sometimes latches, that shows he can do it, he's just still really little right now. A support group should hopefully help. It's quite rare a latch problem can't be corrected, especially after tongue/lip problems have been addressed, so I wouldn't worry. I've now been bf-ing for nearly ten weeks but it's only been for the last two that I've felt totally confident our latch is good. Things change as they grow and get bigger, and it gets so much easier if you stick with it.

They might suggest nipple shields for you to allow your nipples to recover and help your baby learn to latch properly ... these help lots of women and babies get started and could be really useful. Good luck mama!

Totally agree with the PP. I had the same exact problem with sore nipples and was told my son had a tongue tie. I had my son's tongue clipped at 10 days old, but it didn't help with feeding. We used nipple shields until my son was about 5-6 weeks old, when feeding started to get better. I don't know if it would have gotten better without the procedure or not, but it did get better. It was a very slow process, but by 10-12 weeks, we were doing just fine. I still breastfeed and my son is 13 months!
