Ive seen lots of threads about low amniotic fluid (af) but not about too much, i didnt think it was a prob but they said it can indicate gd so i have to go back next week for the gtt, i had steroids for babies lungs so cant have the test before!
Does anyone know anything about having too much AF? was it a problem?

I had it. its called POLYHYDRAMNIOS. I got it at 28weeks... and it increased until my body was full with water. I could almost feel my ankles splitting. I couldn't breathe. But i went term +4 and were induced in the end... I had all tests done, all came back clear. Landed me a few stays in hospital but My baby is now 5months and thriving. All the best. PM me if you want to talk. xxx

I have GD and at the hospital today they explained why excess amniotic fluid is an indicator. Basically with uncontrolled GD too much sugar is getting to the baby. This causes the baby to urinate more (I know not a great image) and increases the volume of amniotic fluid. If it is GD then you don't need to panic as you will be monitored closely to control your blood sugars to make sure the baby isn't getting too much - the fluid issue would then be under control too. Good luck! xxx

thanks for that, do you have excess fluid, im being tested next week it doesnt seem long enough to put things right, should i stop eating sugary things now do you think

I don't have excess fluid (had a growth scan yesterday) but they explained that to me when showing what they were looking for. The diet is basically low-GI, no sugar. If you want to do something while you're waiting for your test just cut out the sweet treats, swap white bread for granary and make sure you eat regular meals. Most of all try not to worry hun, it will make your blood sugars higher. Out of interest how did they determine you have extra fluid? xxx

i had a scan to check placenta position and she said then that there was a lot of fluid

They would have checked growth (abdomen, head and femur) to work out size of the baby. Large baby is probably the biggest concern with GD (baby getting too much sugar) so if this wasn't mentioned to you I wouldnt worry too much about GD, even if you have it, it doesn't look like it's affected the size of the baby so you would probably be able to control easily. Of course there could be another cause, are they checking you for anything else? xxx

i think the baby was the right size as she never mentioned the baby, the only thing they keeping an eye on is placenta previa major but i dont think they are connected

I had polyhydramnios first time round, it was the only indicator I had of GD and I was diagnosed at 35 weeks. I remember I just felt really uncomfy and got out of breath really easily.

It can be due to GD or no particular cause, mine never really went down but my daughter was a normal weight/size. The main problems it causes is the baby has too much room (we joked that my daughter had her own swimming pool!) so they can change position even towards the end and your waters can break early. From the time I was diagnosed the hospital staff were at pains to tell me my waters would go early, I had towels in the car and bed, nightmare visions on every supermarket visit, etc etc - didn't happen, ended up having my waters broken for me!!!
