DH and I are pleased to announce the birth of our beautiful little boy, George. Born on Monday 30th April 2012 at 05.24 by EMSC weighing 6.35lbs.
My Story Its a long one I seem to rabbit on!
My pregnancy had been going great guns until around 36 weeks when my BP started to creep steadily up and up, nothing too serious, but enough to cause them to keep more of an eye on me. I had planned to have a lovely water birth on a midwife led unit, but was told at this time that it was not possible.
Due to raised BP and ++ protein in my urine, I had to visit the Day Assessment Unit and was told I would be induced on 1st May, I would be 38+3. They thought it would be better to bring baby out now rather than wait till full term.
My next appointment at the Day Assessment Unit on was on Saturday 28th April As usual, they hooked me up to the CTG machine to check babys heart rate, which showed he was happy. Unfortunately my blood test came back with high Uterine Acid, this coupled with ++ Protein and raised BP, I was told they would like to admit me overnight for monitoring with a view to inducing me the next day .
So I went home to collect my hospital bag ready for the hospital stay. I went overnight no problem, babys heart was great and I felt fine. They started the process of inducing me the next morning with a pessary, which had absolutely no effect after 6 hours. Then, later around 7pm they inserted the second pessary. This one was awful, it gave mo so much pain within about an hour, like a period youve never imagined!! I hoped this meant I was dilating, but when they checked my cervix was still closed.
I was told they would check again in the morning and take it from there.
At around 1am they came to check babys heart on the CTG machine and they noticed his heart rate dropping intermittently from 140 to 80. When the midwife saw it, I looked at her face and I knew something wasnt right, she was quite concerned. She told me she was going to get a doctor to have a look.
The doctor came and looked at the graph and suggested I be transferred immediately to labour and delivery as we may need to do an EMCS. I was mortified. My husband wasnt around as it was outside visiting hours and my baby was clearly in distress.
While gathering my bag and clothes I called DH to let him know what was happening. Meantile they whisked me away to L&D and hooked me up again to the CTG machine and inserted the needle in my wrist to hook me up to an IV drip.
DH must have done about 140mph on the motorway as he did about 30 miles in what seemed like 5 minutes and saw me in L&D hooked and wired up!
The consultant was asking me to change positions, from lying on my left to right and then on my back, as they thought that babys head might be on the cord causing him to lose oxygen. It seemed to work on my back so the consultant broke my waters to try and start my labour naturally, but unfortunately I was not dilating.
Ultimately they decided it was time to perform an EMCS. They were not happy that LOs heart rate was still unstable and thought he may have the cord around his neck.
I was rushed into the theatre where they administered the spinal block. They wouldnt let hubby in at this point, which I was upset about. The spinal stung a bit, and the feeling of going numb from the waist down was very strange.
Within 10 minutes of the spinal going in, they had me hooked up and ready to go. Hubby was sat next to my head, he was my rock.
All I could feel was a lot of tugging and pulling, the midwives were really good, telling me exactly what the surgeon was doing. She told me when the head was out and all of a sudden I heard baby cry. It was the most amazing sound ever, I dont think Ive ever cried so much in my entire life.
But then baby went quiet and I kept asking DH if he was okay. The midwives and all other theatre people were crowding around him and we didnt know what was going on for a minute, which seemed like hours. Then he cried again, and it was a relief. They asked DH if he would like to cut the cord (shorter as it had to be cut when he was immediately taken out), which he did. Ive never seen my husband cry like he did when he saw our little boy, my heart just melted.
I wasnt able to see our son for what seemed like ages, as people were everywhere. They then passed him to DH who managed to hold him up so I could see his face, but I couldnt seem to move my hands.
They ushers DH and baby into the recovery room while they stitched me up, which took about 10 minutes.
They wheeled me in to recovery where I saw DH with our little boy. He put him on my chest and baby started rooting straight away, then finally managed to latch on. The most amazing experience of my entire life.
I was in hospital for a total of 3 days and 4 nights, and went home around 40 hours after my section.
